🔋 As next-generation #batteries get nearer to commercialisation, developers are increasingly licensing their technologies to OEMs. This year, around 12 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of #solidstate and #lithium metal battery production is expected, up from 5 GWh last year, according to Benchmark’s Solid-State and Lithium Metal Batteries Forecast. This comes as US-based developer QuantumScape announced it would licence its solid-state battery technology to PowerCo, the battery making subsidiary of Germany’s Volkswagen. Solvay of Belgium, one of the world's top suppliers of high-purity hydrogen peroxide for chipmaking, has delayed construction of its Arizona plant for later review, sources with knowledge of the matter said. They cited cost concerns as well as the longer-than-expected wait for its key clients Intel and TSMC to expand production. Chang Chun Group, another leading producer of semiconductor-grade hydrogen peroxide, significantly scaled back the construction of its new plant in Arizona. The Taiwanese chemical group has started building part of the plant, but on a much smaller scale than planned. A source familiar with the matter said the cost is "several times" greater than it had expected. KPCT Advanced Chemicals, a joint venture between Kanto-PPC and Chemtrade, also postponed the construction of its high-purity sulphuric acid plant in Arizona. Topco, a leading chemical and material distributor, has put on hold its planned logistics center in Arizona, a company executive told Nikkei Asia. https://lnkd.in/gpCkEvGH

Production capacity is running wild! The planned production capacity of silicon anodes in 2024 has exceeded 400,000 tons! It was learned that the popularity of the silicon-based anode track reflects the urgent need for new productivity in the lithium battery industry chain. In 2023, the capacity utilization rate of lithium batteries, including upstream materials, will drop rapidly, and the price of the industrial chain will "roll up again and again" under the background of oversupply. In this regard, the industry consensus believes that the "involution" of the industry is mainly based on homogeneous competition. In addition to reducing costs and reducing prices, technological innovation will open up new increments for major enterprises and guide the industry into a new round of healthy competition. At a time when production expansion activities are becoming cautious, innovative anode materials—silicon-based anodes remain hot. From the end of 2023 to the present, more than 400,000 tons of silicon-based anode planning projects have disclosed progress, involving an investment amount of nearly 20 billion yuan. At the end of 2023, Anhui Yuling New Energy's annual output of 30,000 tons of silicon-based composite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries was put into production in Huaiyuan County, Bengbu City, Anhui. On January 6, 2024, Shanghai Yuling New Energy and Inner Mongolia Xingyang Technology "deposited A cooperation agreement was reached on the "Silicon Carbon" project. According to previous research by GGII, domestic silicon-based anode shipments are expected to be at 27,000 tons in 2023, and are expected to exceed 60,000 tons in 2025. Based on this shipment schedule, the industrialization of silicon-based anodes has accelerated significantly. The following three signals should not be ignored. 1-Two major technical routes are running in parallel, silicon carbon is hot again. 2-The overall scale of the industrial chain continues to expand, silicon-based anode companies have integrated awareness, and there are more entrants in upstream raw materials, equipment and other subdivisions. 3-The industrialization of silicon-based anodes is still in its initial stage, and ramping up production and volume depends on terminal demand.
