The pre-production phase of filmmaking is a meticulous journey that demands dedication and attention to detail. Aspiring filmmakers like yourself delve into a multifaceted realm, beginning with the crucial task of securing suitable locations. Each setting contributes to the visual narrative, becoming a canvas upon which your story unfolds. The intricate process of hiring a dedicated crew follows, where every member plays a pivotal role in bringing your vision to life. From the director shaping the overall creative direction to the cinematographer capturing the essence of each scene, each role intertwines to form the backbone of your project. Simultaneously, the arduous task of casting emerges as a pivotal element in crafting a compelling narrative. The actors chosen become the embodiment of your characters, infusing them with life and authenticity. As you navigate through auditions and casting decisions, the synergy between cast members and their ability to convey the intended emotions become paramount. Amidst these intricacies, the relentless pursuit of ideal locations adds an additional layer of challenge. Scouting for the perfect backdrop involves a blend of creativity and practicality, ensuring that each scene unfolds seamlessly in the chosen environment. Throughout this process, the weight of responsibility may deprive you of peaceful nights, but it is this very dedication that fuels the journey toward bringing my project "Teddy" to the screen. #preproduction #filmmakingbeginners #filmmakeradvice

In the realm of filmmaking, the pressure behind the scenes is an omnipresent force, a current that surges through every aspect of production. In my latest video, I delve into the intense whirlwind of orchestrating a movie, acknowledging the inevitability of mistakes that inevitably become stepping stones in the learning process. Despite having two dedicated assistants, the sheer magnitude of responsibilities demanded more than anticipated. As a producer, my role extended beyond mere coordination; it was about ensuring the seamless progression of every element, ensuring the film's birth amid the chaos. The relentless pursuit of perfection amidst myriad distractions became my mantra. Filmmaking is a delicate dance, and staying focused emerged as the linchpin in overcoming the multifaceted challenges. Amidst the whirlwind, my unwavering focus on the end goal, the completion of the film, became the guiding force. Pressure is not a foe but a companion on this cinematic journey, pushing boundaries, testing resilience, and ultimately, sculpting an invaluable learning experience that no film school can encapsulate. #behindthescenes #shortfilm #producer

Short films are the most common training ground for aspiring filmmakers. This is true for film school students as well as self-taught filmmakers. Making a short film is not only a good way to hone your craft—it can also be a launching pad for your cinematic career. Short films are often as engaging as feature-length films, and many well-known directors have made some notable short films that are worth watching. It’s not uncommon for filmmakers to start their careers with short films, and these are often the projects that make them widely known and lead to much bigger projects. Short films have been given more attention in recent years thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix giving them a space to be enjoyed, as they are often shown in film festivals and are hard to find outside traditional platforms. A friendly advice to aspiring filmmakers: 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. Post inspired by Outstanding Screenplays from Instagram. Stepping into the new year with a sense of anticipation, I am enthusiastic about the prospect of producing and directing my short film, "Teddy." The creative journey ahead is a mosaic of new beginnings and boundless opportunities, a canvas waiting to be painted with the vision I've carefully crafted. As I delve into the filmmaking process, the excitement is coupled with a keen awareness of the responsibilities that come with transforming an idea into a tangible cinematic experience. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final edit, I embrace the multifaceted nature of filmmaking, where each decision, whether in casting or script development, contributes to the unique tapestry of my project. While the filmmaking process promises enjoyment, it also entails a comprehensive checklist essential for success. I find joy in the meticulous planning of pre-production, securing locations, and assembling a dedicated team to bring "Teddy" to life. The collaborative effort with my crew adds layers of creativity and expertise to the production, ensuring that the film resonates with the intended audience. In the midst of capturing scenes and guiding performances during shooting, I recognize the need for precision and attention to detail. Post-production becomes a playground for refining the raw footage into a cohesive narrative, combining technical finesse with artistic expression. As I navigate this checklist, I am fueled by the passion to see "Teddy" evolve from a mere concept into a captivating cinematic achievement. #creativeprocess #filmmaker #beginneradvice #filmforbeginners

New York based filmmaker with a passion for romantic comedies. Director of "Dating & New York" (IFC), At Midnight (Paramount+) and EXmas (Amazon Freevee).
There's a lot they don't teach you in Film School about how to make your first film. Where will you get the money? What happens when you wake up and hate your idea? Do you need an agent? How do I cast actors? How do I get someone with a "name"? Where should I put the camera? Why not just call Taylor up? What happens when the film is done? What happens when the film is done and sold, and it's been a year, and I haven't made any money? To remedy this, I started as program called "Follow Up Film School", a five week Zoom room that goes over practical ways to make your first movie. We just wrapped "Season One" and I am now prepping for "Season Two". Wednesday's March 6th - April 3rd @ 7pm EST. 01: The psychology of making things and picking your start date. (March 6th) 02: Financing your film and the business of it all. (March 13th) 03: Casting, prepping, and not doubting yourself. (March 20th) 04: Production, directing, and putting out fires. (March 27th) 05: Completing, releasing, and marketing your film. (April 3rd) Testimonials from Season One "I learned more about practical, 21st-century filmmaking in 5 hours with Jonah than 4 years of Film School. I'm incredibly grateful he put on this program, peeling back the curtain and being completely transparent about what being a contemporary filmmaker is like - creatively, financially, and as mental health is concerned. If you feel ready to make your first feature but don't know the first step, this is literally it" “Follow Up Film School provided me with great insights and information about the industry. Jonah thoroughly explained various aspects of filmmaking and tied them to real world examples to provide insight into making an independent film. Follow Up Film School helped me further define my filmmaking goals and move forward in my career.” "You simplified my biggest fear, Money. You made the subject so easy to digest… thanks to your guidance I feel more confident in approaching this process." We've got 35 spots, feel free to tag or share with folks who are ready to make their first film. https://lnkd.in/eaBhNy5b
