As a Black woman from a steel town like Pittsburgh, witnessing the historic agreement reached at the Ultium EV battery plant in Lordstown, Ohio, fills me with immense pride and hope for the future. This agreement, which will double the pay of workers and provide crucial safety protections, is more than just a victory for the employees at Ultium. It signifies a powerful stand against economic inequality and unsafe working conditions that have long plagued our industrial communities.
Pittsburgh, much like Lordstown, has seen its share of industrial decline and the subsequent impact on our communities. The closing of factories and the loss of good-paying jobs have left deep scars. But today, we see a glimmer of renewal and resilience. The workers at Ultium, backed by the United Auto Workers (UAW), have shown us that it's possible to demand and achieve better standards, even in the rapidly evolving EV sector.
This victory is particularly powerful when we consider the diverse backgrounds of those leading this charge. Among them are individuals who, like me, understand the struggles and triumphs of our communities. This diversity and resilience amplify our impact and bring about meaningful change.
As Dolores Huerta said, "Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world." This agreement is a testament to the strength that comes from standing together, diverse yet united, to demand fairness and dignity at work.
The transformation we're witnessing at the Ultium plant is a beacon of hope for all of us fighting for economic justice and safe working conditions. It reaffirms the belief that when we challenge the status quo and fight for what is right, we can indeed stop the race to the bottom and breathe new life into our communities.
