Speaking with school officials this past weekend, here's what stood out to me... Across the county, resources and policies varied drastically between school districts. When asked about security and safety initiatives, it was often the superintendent, or similar position, wearing multiple hats who was driving these initiatives. SRO programs and the desire to have one were similarly varied between the districts. Among the several school districts present, one individual disclosed mixed feelings regarding their previous SRO program. My takeaways: ➡ If we as a society are going to require children to attend these institutions, we are also responsible for providing adequate resources, including administrative staff. Speaking from experience, the term "wearing multiple hats" is often code for "I've got too much on my plate." How can we expect districts to implement and maintain effective programs when they are stretched so thin? ➡ Policy consistency across the district would benefit county and local law enforcement staff. If every district has unique policies, it's hard to keep tabs on everything, especially with stretched resources. One policy I'd like to see more consistency in is the SRO program, whether it's for or against. I am a proponent of standardizing an SRO program across the county. ❓ What is your experience with SRO programs (positive or negative)? ❓ #schoolsafety #schoolsecurity #santabarbara #sro

So many are talking about this massive culture change, what we refer to as the social contract between families, the community and the education organisations within it. It is manifesting now in a massive increase in absenteeism. More than a quarter of secondary learners are defined as consistently absent, missing at least 10% of the school week. A concerning factor is that it is becoming as prevalent in primary as in secondary. The Chief Inspector of Schools in England highlights that this lack of trust in organisations is a crucial factor seen by many responding headteachers. On another note, a department advisor on the behaviour policy suggests that Covid has broken the spell as a significant point of change. I have clear views on the response, and you will have yours. Families will only invest in the school if they value what it provides in the short and long term. Simply stating it is a legal requirement and using punitive measures to enforce attendance will fail and have a significant community impact, maybe even an unintended consequence, which we may already be seeing. The one-size-fits-all approach is blinkering our view of impact. There is less change in engagement for parents in communities that value schools, but in communities where education outcomes are less embedded in their future, the reason to be in school is less demanding of their presence. Tinkering with problems: teacher shortage, recruitment and retention, RAAC and building failure, COVID and its aftermath are all pressures exposing a core weakness. Is the curriculum and how we do school fit for the 21st century? https://lnkd.in/eCbFRMWN #edtech #educationreform #educationpolicy #schoolleadership #headteacher #principal #secondaryeducation #primaryeducation

Creating Safer Schools with Compassion and Care: Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Workshop During Safe Schools Week, DCIU hosted a vital workshop on the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG), presented by Dr. Terri Erbacher, to empower participants with effective tools for keeping schools safe. This evidence-based model encourages a flexible, problem-solving approach—moving away from punitive, zero-tolerance policies toward building a positive, respectful school climate. This five-step model supports school staff in: ✅ Triage and threat identification ✅ Attempts to resolve transient threats ✅ Responding to substantive threats ✅ Conducting a thorough safety evaluation ✅ Developing safety plans to prevent conflict and violence As we reflect on the importance of Safe Schools Week, let’s remember that school safety is a year-round effort. Students, educators, caregivers, and community leaders all play crucial roles in fostering safe learning environments where every student feels valued, treated fairly, and supported. By working together, we can create schools where students thrive—not just academically but emotionally and socially.
