🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery

Reducing food waste in your food business is not only environmentally responsible but can also improve your bottom line. Here are 4 ways to minimize food waste: 1. Re-use vegetable scraps for broths/soups 2. Composting 3. Donate surplus food 4. Optimize your inventory management I know that donating and composting may not minimize waste in the traditional sense, but they are both very marketable things in the sense of environmental stewardship and community values. And these are things that and those things can help improve perception or create better community relationships. #minimizingfoodwaste #restaurantindustry #recipecostcalculator #inventorymanagement

Late last year, backed by new research, the EPA introduced a new Wasted Food Scale, replacing the Food Recovery Hierarchy established in 1990. Businesses should take note of this new tool to help them identify priority actions to prevent and reduce food waste. Among the changes: Compost has moved up the scale and is now recognized as a more preferred method than in the previous hierarchy; and Donate/Upcycle has been added to the scale. Did you know that wasting food not only wastes money but also has a significant impact on the environment? When food is wasted, it ends up in landfills, where it produces methane - a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.⠀ ⠀ By being mindful of our food waste, we can help reduce the environmental impact of our daily lives. Start by planning meals, buying only what you need, and storing food properly. And if you do end up with leftovers, consider donating them to a local food bank or composting them instead of throwing them away.⠀ ⠀
