We are thrilled to announce that Gen2 has received a 'Good' rating in our latest Ofsted report! Craig Smith, Managing Director at Gen2, shared, "This report shows that learners are feeling the positive impact of our training programmes, developing new skills and receiving suitable support to achieve their qualifications. It’s also testament to the commitment and passion of our staff, who ensure that our courses provide pathways to employment and meet regional skills priorities." The report described how “tutors use their specialist industry expertise to help learners and apprentices understand how theory applies to the workplace” and noted that learners and apprentices benefited from “constructive and developmental feedback.” It found that achievement rates were high, with learners and apprentices well-prepared for their final assessments and attaining at least their expected progress on their courses and apprenticeships. “We regret to inform you that unfortunately we will not be progressing further…” I’m no stranger to this sentence. A lot of apprentices aren’t. Rejection is often silently processed and can create feelings of insecurity. Whether it's because securing an apprenticeship seems like a goal that seems too big, or a path that looks uncertain, you shouldn’t stop because of insecurity or perceived limits. The rejection rate in my recruitment cycle were ~63% and have possibly climbed higher this year as the competition increases. For some, there’s the inability to share experiences with family or friends who understand the process and can often amplify the feelings of self doubt. Whilst rejection transparency is so important, the active steps taken to overcome rejection need to be more widely available. Empowering aspiring apprentices with knowledge to improve their performance needs to be delivered alongside normalising the rejection phase Take control and seek to improve each application. Reach out to current apprentices in your desired company and role. A large majority are more than happy to help. Go to insight events where you can hear directly from the Early Careers teams and successful apprentices. Current apprentices have launched initiatives. Be proactive! As the rejection rates rise and your nerves set in, stay determined and focused. Your resilience will pay off and it’s crucial to keep learning on how to improve your applications. "Will A-Levels or a BTEC prepare me better for University?" This was a question I was asked by a student on the Future Frontiers careers education programme at Kantar today. My answer, 'It really depends on the University course, and first we need to consider whether a Degree is the best route into your chosen career because it isn't always.' For this student's career interest, Architecture, a Degree is necessary, but although A-Levels have long been seen as the route to University, just look at the entry requirements for many University courses and you'll see that BTECs are also listed, as are T-Levels. Rather than studying at a University, you might also consider a Degree Apprenticeship during which you'll be based at a place of employment, you'll be paid, you'll work and you'll also achieve a Degree. There are so many options and the key to finding a good one for you is being honest about who you are as an individual, what will suit you, and considering this in the context of what is required of you to reach the career you aspire to.
