Director, Asia Global Institute; Victor and William Fung Professor in Economics, HKU Business School
A topic that’s deep in my heart for awhile - Industrial policy in a fragmented world. Look forward to speaking about it at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and having a conversation with Prof Danny Quah on geoeconomics. Come if you happen to be in Singapore on March 6. Governments worldwide are shifting their economic policies from neoliberalism to industrial policies that prioritize security, self-sufficiency, and domestic sourcing. This change is a natural response to the new geopolitical realities in which rising nationalistic and protectionist sentiments have been fired up by the unsustainable increase in within-nation inequality after decades of hyper-globalization before 2008. In this talk, I will deep dive into the emergence of new globalization trends where the absence of some exceptional conditions had led to decades of hyper-globalization. I will also examine how this geoeconomic fragmentation has lowered global economic growth on the one hand, and created new opportunities for smaller states and companies on the other, thus increasing the multipolarity of the world. The talk will conclude by discussing how national industrial policy can be used to achieve a more sustainable and inclusive economy in a fragmented world.
Join us on 6 March as Prof Heiwai Tang, Professor of Economics at HKU Business School and Director of Asia Global Institute, will be giving a talk on "Industrial Policy in a Fragmented World: Causes And Consequences.” Danny Quah, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, will chair the event. "Krugman (born 1953) is an American economist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2008 for his contributions to new trade theory and new economic geography. (...) Starting in the late 1970s, Krugman rewrote the research agenda by incorporating imperfect competition in international trade models. (...) With increasing returns to scale, countries that are identical still have an incentive to trade with each other. Industries in specific countries concentrate on specific niche products, gaining economies of scale in those niches. (...) Krugman shows that even with no comparative advantage trade still occurs. Second, there is two-way trade in absolutely identical products. Third, such seemingly pointless trade can be mutually beneficial to the two countries, because the shift from monopoly to duopoly in each country brings prices closer to marginal costs. More generally, trade reduces domestic monopoly power and acts as a proxy for antitrust policy. This benefit remains even though some resources are being lost in costly transport, as long as the transport costs are not too large." --- #economics #economists #nobelprize #internationaltrade #economicgeography #historyofeconomicthought
