At 6:00 pm I will be part of an interview tonight on NINE News about how we can improve road safety after 2023 being one of Australia's worst years for loss of life and serious trauma. With more than 1250 Australians being killed and 40,000+ serious injuries last year, we need a commitment to do some very basic things ... and to start immediately... We need to build and maintain our roads to 3 Stars or better, or if we can't improve infrastructure immediately, use a drop in the speed limit so that we can improve the star rating... To change driver behaviour, we need to increase the use of average speed cameras for all vehicles (not just heavy vehicles as in NSW). We need to expand the use of mobile phone detection systems to include both seatbelts and speed (we only need to gazette them and they can then be used as speed cameras)... And for our communities, we each need to choose not to speed, to choose not drive distracted, and to choose not drive under the influence or alcohol or drugs... and so importantly, let's choose to give those on the road ahead, the space they need to be safe... In choosing to do the above, we are really saying that we believe that everyone has a right to #GetHomeSafe ... and that we are going to be a part of making that happen!

○ The #ParkBrake, also known as the parking brake or handbrake, plays a crucial role in automotive safety and functionality. ○ Here's why it's important and some solutions related to it: ▪︎ Importance of Park Brake: Safety: The park brake helps secure a parked vehicle, preventing it from rolling away. This is particularly important on inclines where the transmission alone may not be sufficient to hold the vehicle in place. ▪︎ Emergency Brake: In case of a primary braking system failure, the park brake can act as an emergency brake, helping to bring the vehicle to a stop. ▪︎ Manual Transmission: In vehicles with manual transmissions, the park brake is essential for holding the vehicle stationary when parked, as there is no "park" gear like in automatic transmissions. ▪︎ Additional Stability: Engaging the park brake can provide additional stability to the vehicle, especially when parked for an extended period. ☆ Solutions: ▪︎ Regular Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of the park brake system, including cables, levers, and pads, can ensure its proper functioning. ▪︎ Proper Usage: Ensuring that the park brake is engaged whenever the vehicle is parked, especially on inclines, can prevent accidents and damage. ▪︎ Emergency Use: Educating drivers about the park brake's role as an emergency brake and how to use it effectively in case of a primary braking system failure. ▪︎ Automatic Park Brake Systems: Some modern vehicles come equipped with automatic park brake systems that engage the park brake when the vehicle is turned off or in certain other situations, enhancing safety and convenience. ▪︎ Upgrading Technology: Upgrading to newer park brake technologies, such as electronic park brakes, can improve reliability and ease of use. Overall, the park brake is a critical component of a vehicle's safety system, and proper understanding and maintenance are essential to ensure its effectiveness. #roadsafety #accidentprevention #mitigationstrategies #passengersafety #futuremobility #saferroads #zeroaccidents #roadaccidents #pedestriansafety National Highways Authority of India Ministry of Road Transport & Highways - India
