Oh Katja, you just took me down memory lane. My first car was a 1972 VW Bug. Imron blue paint with black diamond tuck and roll upholstery. I LOVED that car! Thanks for the memory.
I’m not a fan of the phrase “favorite student” but I do like celebrating the successess of ALL my students, and after 22 years I know of a few 🥇 and they are the “memorable” ones, the ones who never stop being a student, who know that experiencal “failure” is the only true path to success, otherwise it is all theory with no application. They are often the ones receptive to building an entrepreneurial MINDSET/SKILL SET. Guest speakers spark their imagination, and I nurture their creativity and confidence. I also teach collaboration skills and hold students accountable for their success. The concept of “grading” is fading fast, I prefer the portfolio approach and grade the project AND the process. Students also peer and self assess. The weekly reflection is my usual go-to. And yes, I still have to turn in those A’s and B’s with an occasional C, D or F. If you get below a B it is not my fault btw.
Some students (and parents) still see good GPA’s (aka Godly Professor A’s) as the path to a great ROI, and turn to US News and Reports as their “financial advisor.” But a better way to think about “investing in someone’s future” is to learn about what those “creative kids” are up too. News flash, they are not all art students but most of mine are.
Granted, less are Art History majors, most are Studio who take an art history class or two! Chris Sainato was one such student. After Modern Art and a paper on Russian Revolution Graphic Posters, he took my Business of Art and Entrepreneurship. I had to wait till after I got the “golden ring” to unwed myself from worrying about what others think and develop this course, yes, I got tenure in 2008. I have to admit, it felt good to title my course with those two words; I can’t tell you the number of times I heard “we’re not a business school, you are teaching at a Liberal Arts College Lorraine.” Some I knew had not yet wrapped their head around teaching #entrepreneurship and that was ok. But the students….that was a whole different story. Class had waiting lists, taught it every other year now every year for past four and may teach 2 x a year given the demand.
But I digress….this is not about me being spiteful, holding grudges or complaining or any of that, who has time !? It’s about the STUDENT. And the ones who are happy (THAT is what success looks like) they tend to be the creative, compassionate, kind and dedicated ones, not deterred by the naysayers, the “what are you going to do with an art degree?” kind. No, these are the students who knew that hard work is not a sprint but a marathon. The students who knew it might take a few years to get to the “starting pay of a STEM grad” (also a myth btw).
But at the end of the day, I do have “favorites” and they are the ones who make me a better Professor. And here is one such former #Union student.
Congratulations Chris. You have no idea how much joy this brings me!! Bravo my friend, bravo! Can’t wait to see what you and your team do next.

In July of 2018, I texted my wife a Craigslist ad for a VW bus and said,
"I want to trade my truck for this."
Which, rightfully so, was immediately met with a kind-hearted,
"Why don't we talk about this when we get off work."
That evening, while walking our two dogs, my wife kicked off the conversation with a question,
"Why do you want to trade in your perfectly good truck for a not-so-perfect weird-looking 'bus'?"
This question led to me sharing my desire for a life of adventure;
that bus very tangibly represented that to me,
and sitting in an office every day did not.
Grace encouragingly responded to those desires, "Why would you settle for a representation of that adventure?
Why don't we do the thing for real?"
Flash forward to October 2018:
We both quit our full-time jobs, sold our cars, found a renter for our house, and bought an RV.
Dec. 1, 2018:
We pulled out of our driveway in a yellow Winnebago Brave (pictured), listening to "Drive" by Ben Rector.
And here are some things I learned:
Identify and express desires.
Knowing what you want is great.
Being able to clearly communicate desires is invaluable.
Be curious.
Grace definitely thought getting a VW bus was a stupid idea, but instead of saying, "This is a stupid idea." she met me with, "Why do you want this?" and listened intently to my desires without judgment.
Don't wait until someday to pursue what you want.
Write down what you want.
Tell someone who cares about you.
Make decisions based on what you want.
One of two things will happen:
1) You'll realize you don't actually want what you think you do
or
2) You'll move closer to getting what you want
Both are great outcomes.

History shows that groundbreaking inventions often have humble beginnings. The history of the airplane traces back to a simple bike, with Wilbur and Orville Wright paving the way for innovation. 🛩 🌎
Exciting times lie ahead as we embark on our own invention journey. Our focus is on developing a Digital Selling System that ensures both customers and dealership employees can effortlessly sell and service all transportation needs. 🚜 🏎 🚗 🚘 🚒 🚚 🚛 🚵♂️ 🚲 🏍 🛵
It's incredible to think that everything started with a bike 🚲, and now we're exploring the potential of e-Bikes to inspire a wave of new innovations. Let's embrace technology as it paves the path for welcoming new trends in the future.

It's hard to believe that our family company will be celebrating its 80th Anniversary this year (Since 1944).
The last 3 months have been a turbulent time in the Die Sets, Plate, Parallels, and Custom Fabrications market segment. We have seen a 100-year-old manufacture in this segment close their doors (Superior Die Set), and needless to say, this has caused a “ripple effect” through the 5 states we are Blessed to service (MO / IL / KS / IA / NE). But it is in these times of change, we (Lee Horneyer Company) felt it imperative to take a hard “look in the mirror” in the trust and value we are offering to our marketplace in this segment (Die Sets, Plate, Parallels, and Custom Fabrications).
Lee Horneyer Company (Since 1944) is proud to introduce a company that is “that” (On time… As Promised… At a Cost In Line With Fair Market Value), but so much more…..
Author of “Travel Retail - The Insider’s Guide”. We help Travel Retail to maximise commercial value from their data - Building a business that clients love to work with.
What is the #travelretail story?
What are we REALLY selling?
We are not selling gifts, self treats or restocking.
We are not selling products.
We are selling more than that.
That is what we need to tap into.
Last night I stumbled upon this video. Powerful stuff.
Jeremy Renner had a bit of a run in with a snow plow leaving him with 38 broken bones, a sliced liver, an eye popped out and a popped lung.
Yet, despite all odds…. He is running.
For him, Brooks trainers were a symbol of hope.
Hope led to a new perspective… a realisation that a change in perspective is the real superpower.
Adversity is fuel.
A product is a vehicle that carries intent.
A bottle of whisky might be a gift but its intent can be so much more. It could be a celebration, gratitude, reconciliation or just an opportunity to share stories over a dram.
A bottle of perfume can be a lift in mood, a statement, an act to attract or wanting to be part of the brand lifestyle.
If retailers want to be a brand in our channel, one of luxury, it needs to tell a story…. Otherwise it is a 7-Eleven, a blurred store on the travellers journey.
As for Brooks, I will certainly consider them for my next pair. A trainer is a trainer at the end of the day but, I like the values it has shared in this story.
#dutyfree could do worse than borrowing their slogan… let’s run there.
If you get time, the video is worth a watch.
Have a great day.

History is replete with chance events that change everything. Think the collapse in 1989 of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union and the resulting liberation of Eastern Europe.
In 1994 we were trying to figure out how to make money in the fire extinguisher wholesale parts business. We failed.
But we did, one day, receive a call from a fire equipment distributor asking if we knew anyone who was selling Halon 1301. We did not and told him so. The next day we received a call from a fire equipment distributor asking if we knew anyone who needed to buy Halon 1301.
And a light bulb turned on.
It’s been said that if you don’t celebrate the milestones, you’re only passing thru time. This year, 2024, Wesco celebrates its 30th anniversary. Over the holidays we took time to ponder this event and reflect on our past. The hundreds of successes. The thousands of failures (We figure we’re batting .333). All resulting in a hardened, resilient specialty company serving the clean agent fire suppression market. And we couldn’t be in a better spot.
There is a scene in the movie Top Gun – Maverick, where Maverick (Tom Cruise), after being berated by an Admiral (Ed Harris) is asked why he, after 30 years on the Navy, hadn’t progressed beyond Captain. Maverick’s answer, which should have been the movie’s tagline, was, “I’m where I belong, sir.” That struck us as a fitting response to the question “Where does Wesco fit?” “They’re not a manufacturer”. “They’re not a distributor/installer”. Our answer? We’re where we belong.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone, especially our loyal customers, who made this possible.
