As much as the youth of Ladakh enjoy wearing and find comfort in contemporary clothes, they also love to wear their traditional dress, symbolic of social identity in both a culturally rich country such as India and on the global platform. Because of this enthusiasm amongst the youth, many fashion designers have emerged in Ladakh over the last decade. These designers are using creative ideas to revive the traditional dress into a more functional item in the day-to-day life of a common person. They are also experimenting and recreating traditional dress with a contemporary touch, keeping intact its essence and character. They focus more on homegrown fabrics like sheep wool, yak wool, camel wool and pashmina, and also experiment with cotton, linen, silk and brocades, which are sourced mostly from the cottage industries of India. The work of designers such as Namza mostly reflects the rich heritage of Ladakh as well as the influences of the silk route, in the types of stitches, patterns, motifs, and embroidery that passed through it. The dresses in this photograph are part of a collection inspired by the Queen’s room (Gyamo-e-zimskhang) at Stok Palace which was built in 1820, a luxurious retreat with elegantly drawn murals on the wall. The inception of Eskandur was driven by our desire to do things right, to create a positive impact. Our focus on perfecting both design and sustainability was paramount. We aimed to be more than just a brand; we wanted to contribute meaningfully. Our journey began with a clear and refined design approach, avoiding any patchwork gimmicks. This led us to cowhides due to their substantial size. However, cowhide comes with thickness and weight challenges. We innovated by slicing the hides to a mere 1/32″ thickness. As we evolved, our designs and the “One size fits all” concept pushed us to incorporate multiple parts, held together with straps and the required size adjustments. And then came the pivotal decision – no visible back stitches or leather undersides. We opted for full leather lining. This dedication to detail and innovation defines Eskandur’s unique identity in today’s luxury landscape.
