This initiative aims to tackle worker shortages in our industry by providing a structured learning path that combines on-the-job training with on-demand virtual classroom instruction. If awarded the funding, the project will span five years (2025-2029) and cover the apprenticeship costs for 450 wire harness operator apprentices. This includes all required instruction for qualifying apprentices, with no program registration costs for participating companies. This week we meet Sam. Sam Boakes-Larke is an intergral part of our engineering department. He has come to Mitchpine with a can do attitude and has fitted in extremely well. Without Sam and the rest of the engineering team, Mitchpine would come to a stand still. So we rely on them to keep operating. Sam tells us abit about his time below: How long have you worked at Mitchpine: 1.5 years Tell us about your job? I’m an apprentice Mechanical Engineer. I work in the maintenance engineering department. As a team we maintain and improve most aspects of the sawmill’s different plants. Whether that be responding to breakdowns or upgrading existing machinery or systems. What’s your favourite part of your job? I enjoy having the freedom to problem solve any issues or breakdowns I come across in order to not only fix the problem but hopefully make it function better and solve any future issues. Since starting your job what training have you done? I’m currently about halfway through my 4-year apprenticeship. Most interesting fact you have learnt about the industry. In sawmilling all parts of the logs are used. There is not waste!

If it takes 1 person 100 days to build it, then 100 people can build it in 1 day. I learned this from an internship I once had. My boss was explaining construction scheduling and how clients thought that more people on the job= job gets done faster. But schedules and building doesn't work like that. You can't be installing windows and drywall at the same time the steel is going up. Training service technicians is the same way. It is so easy to sign up for a couple classes, cram information together in a couple days and then think someone is trained from that experience. Did you check if the foundation of knowledge they understand is solid before trying to build on top of it? If someone doesn't understand the basic sequence of operations for a power burner on a steam boiler, why would they need to learn about parallel positioning? Back to the basics. If you can't give a 10 minute presentation on a topic, you probably do not understand it as well as you think. Can you give a 10 minute presentation about Honeywell Modutrol IV motors, how to select a motor, its accessories, and how to troubleshoot it? #Intel says apprentices will learn core competencies related to technician roles, such as the basics of using hand tools with mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and vacuum systems, and a whole lot more.

I’ve been supporting RMIT University and a group of employer partners to launch Victoria’s first Degree Apprenticeship program. The Degree Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering is a hybrid VE-HE pathway of the Advanced Diploma of Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) over 5 years. The program has been adapted to include a significant systems engineering component. Some employers in the group are in the process right now of recruiting up to 11 new Degree Apprentices with other employers using the program as a pathway to a professional engineering career for their existing technical staff. All Degree Apprentices will be paid full time by their employers for 5 years, with paid time release for their studies. The employers are also making substantial contributions to the student tuition fees. The education program kicks off in early March 2025. As with all programs of this type, significant collaboration between the industry & academy is needed. Additionally, this approach facilitates a more efficient integration of international standards into training, ensuring that industry requirements are built into the learning process from the start. It's a true win-win scenario for both the professional trainee and the business.
