The nation’s rapid urbanisation and economic growth have led to a surge in waste generation, straining its waste management infrastructure. To address this issue, the Malaysian government has embarked on an ambitious journey to transition towards a circular economy for solid waste management. YP Tuan Nga Kor Ming (Nga), the Housing and Local Government Minister, announced that the Circular Economy Blueprint for Solid Waste in Malaysia (2025-2035) outlined several long-term strategies and initiatives aimed at promoting public and industry participation in the circular economy. Singapore's waste management has evolved into a global model for sustainable practices, driven by rapid urbanization and limited land resources. The nation has shifted from traditional disposal to an integrated approach emphasizing reduction, reuse, and recycling, aligning with its Zero Waste Masterplan. Key to this strategy are Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants, which incinerate waste while generating 2% of Singapore's electricity. These plants significantly reduce waste volume by up to 90%, addressing both environmental and energy concerns. Waste Management Infrastructure Singapore’s waste management, regulated by the National Environment Agency (NEA), focuses on achieving its Zero Waste vision and transitioning to a circular economy through advanced infrastructure, addressing the challenges of a growing population and limited land. 1. Waste-to-Energy Plants: Singapore’s Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants incinerate 2,100 metric tons of waste daily, generating 2% of the country’s electricity. This process reduces waste volume by 90%, producing steam that powers turbine generators for electricity. WTE plants play a key role in Singapore’s sustainable waste management efforts. 2. Integrated Waste Management Facility: Processing 5,800 tons a day while managing multiple waste streams, the Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) demonstrates Singapore's commitment to efficient waste segregation and ecologically friendly disposal techniques. 3. Legislation and Regulatory Framework: The National Environment Agency (NEA) oversees waste management in Singapore, which aims to solve the problems of a growing population and finite land by implementing cutting-edge infrastructure to realize its Zero Waste vision and move toward a circular economy. Alongside waste-to-energy initiatives, Singapore is exploring innovative recycling methods. Utilizing citric acid and leftover orange peel waste, the NTU Singapore-CEA Alliance for Research in Circular Economy (SCARCE) has effectively extracted valuable metals from electronic waste, which includes lithium-ion batteries.
