I’m a chaos pilot with divergent thinking, convergent action, and influential communication. (Thanks HBR for the vocab to describe it!) After launching a brand new CMS and article product from idea to prod in 6mos at Forbes, I was asked how I managed to get the team to do it. The same exact team of senior developers and interns working with another product leader performed half as well, leaving behind a trail of pushed launch dates and low priority bug tickets in their wake. I told them I was lucky to collaborate with great colleagues, leverage strong relationships I built across the business, and that operating in uncertainty, always driving the team forward, trusting the expertise and experience of my team to provide input on how we could pivot, and having a steady stream of open communication is just business as usual. (They didn’t find this answer satisfactory and concluded my success was a “fluke”). The truth is leading transformative, innovative initiatives is just second nature to me.
