After the European Championships is before the Olympics! 🌍   While we in Germany are still looking back on the successful European Football Championships, the next major sporting event is casting its shadow ahead: the Olympic Games in the French capital Paris! The games start today and run until August 11. Day 16 of regular contents on social media 😁 Did you know that the Euro 2020 tournament, played in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was the first European Championship to be held across multiple countries? ⚽🌍 This unique format saw 11 cities in 11 different nations host matches, stretching from Baku in Azerbaijan to Glasgow in Scotland. The idea behind this pan-European tournament was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first European Championship, held in 1960. While the concept received mixed reactions, it certainly made for an interesting logistical challenge and a truly continent-wide celebration of football. Another fascinating fact about this tournament is that it featured the highest scoring final in the history of the European Championship. Italy's victory over England in a nail-biting penalty shootout came after a 1-1 draw, bringing the total goals in the final to 2 - a record when including the decisive penalties. The Euro Cup continues to be one of the most-watched sporting events globally, showcasing not just athletic prowess but also the rich tapestry of European cultures and the unifying power of football. The final matchday of the Belgian league is upon us and the tension is at its peak! After last year's memorable showdown, where Royal Antwerp clinched the title with a last-minute winner from Toby Alderweireld, this year's title race promises to be just as thrilling! Three clubs are still in contention for the championship: Club Brugge, Union Saint Gilloise, and Anderlecht. Club Brugge enters the final matchday as the favorite, but the title race is far from decided. Here's a breakdown of the scenarios: Club Brugge will be crowned champions if ▪ they do not lose to Cercle Brugge on the final matchday. ▪ they lose to Cercle and both Union and Anderlecht fail to win. Union St. Gilloise will be crowned champions if ▪ Club Brugge loses to Cercle on the final matchday and Union themselves defeat Genk. Anderlecht will be crowned champions if ▪ they win against Antwerp on Sunday while Club Brugge lose to Cercle Brugge and Union fail to win against Genk. In 2008, Hypercube assisted the Jupiler Pro League in reforming their competition, resulting in a more exciting format from the 2009/10 season onwards. The introduction of a split season, creating a top group and bottom group during the competition, has brought about more excitement and opportunities for all clubs. Because the points are halved after the first phase, the decision comes later in the season. UEFA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS GRAND PLAN European Championships - 32 Nations European Trophy - 16 Nations European Conference - 8 Nations Total - 56 Nations As things stand there are 55 nations but Russia are still on the naughty step. Therefore, Jersey and Guernsey have had shock UEFA applications accepted to bring us back to the necessary numbers. Why a 32 team European Championships? Many comment that a tournament with 24 creates a lack of jeopardy because of third-place qualifiers to the knockout stage and the best way to remove the lack of jeopardy/tournament inbalance is to take it back to a factor of 2 in terms of numbers. That being 32 teams. But what about the qualifiers? Yes the qualifiers would be rather moot if it was extended to 32 teams. But because there are three competitions where every nation plays a part, there would be no need for qualifiers. Format European Championships With it being 32 teams, it would follow the same principles of the 2022 World Cup but with an additional twist. The top 32 UEFA seeded nations would be allocated entry to the competition and after the group stages, the eight that finish bottom of their group stages would go into the drop down phase of the European Trophy Parallel to this the Round of 16 would begin the knockout phase and play out its usual conclusion European Trophy The UEFA nations ranked 33-48 would be drawn together in a one-off clash. If you lose you are out (for now), if you win, you meet one of the 8 drop down teams from the European Championships. With 16 teams left it would work as follows: 8 EC vs ET matches that also act as promotion/relegation playoffs. Win you either get promoted to (or stay) the European Championships or relegated (or stay) to the European Trophy next time around. Regardless of who the 8 winning teams are, they then play the European Trophy knockout phase to its conclusion. European Conference The UEFA nations ranked 49-56 would be drawn against the eight losers of the European Trophy first round. With 16 teams left it would work as follows: 8 ET vs EConf matches that also act as promotion/relegation playoffs. Win you either get promoted to (or stay) the European Trophy or relegated (or stay) to the European Conference next time around. Regardless of who the 8 winning teams are, they then play the European Trophy Conference phase to its conclusion. Everyone gets a tournament No European Qualifiers No Nations League Fluid Movement Between Three Competitions Job Done

Back from the Euros: #4 - Stadium Selection & Transport Resilience: England's match in Gelsenkirchen yesterday afternoon will (just about) be remembered positively. As well as the jubilation at the last-minute equaliser and a winner AET, fans seem to have got away OK post-match too. 🎉 By contrast, the opening win against Serbia took place at 9pm local time, and after the game fans reported unacceptably long waits both for the tram back into Gelsenkirchen and then for onward trains. ⌛ When I went to Gelsenkirchen a few days later for Italy-Spain, again for a 9pm k.o., the situation was identical. (Photo from Hbf). 🚉 Some delays are to be expected on matchdays, but there were reasons why, despite DB being a main tournament sponsor and fans having free local travel, logistics have been repeatedly difficult: - Gelsenkirchen's is one of several German stadia built on the edge of cities, outside walking distance from fan zones / arrival points 🚶♀️ - The transport networks connecting the stadia to the city centre are often of limited capacity e.g. Gelsenkirchen's tram which, by definition, can't deviate from its tracks to enable multiple vehicles to load quickly 🚋 - This also reduces resilience (if the track becomes blocked, there's no Plan B) ⛔ - A repeated refrain is 'If the Bundesliga manages it every week, why can't it work at the Euros?' Match timing is one reason - few German games kick off as late as 9pm local, meaning that fans are more likely to wander back into town on foot. If it's closer to midnight, everyone will need to pile onto the last train. ⏲ A couple of simple changes to the scheduling and logistics would likely have made things run a bit smoother: - Selecting the out-of-town stadia e.g. Gelsenkirchen for afternoon games, and inner-city stadia for night matches 🗺 - Laying on extra buses to supplement trams - lower-tech but sometimes needs must... 🚎 #Euro2024 #Transport #Stadia #Events

News Flash: As the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships concluded last weekend, both Germany and I finished with the same number of medals: ZERO! 🙄 The subtle difference? I was enjoying the competition from the comfort of my couch in Eindhoven, 🍿 while Germany fielded a team of 70 athletes! 💪 This outcome isn't an isolated incident. Consider the performance of Germany's men's football team, which was eliminated in the first round of both the 2022 and 2018 World Cups, losing to Japan and South Korea respectively. Similarly, the German women's football team made a first-round exit from the most recent World Cup this month. The decline in German sports is becoming increasingly hard to overlook, and sad to see happening to such a powerhouse! 😟 Three-time World Championship discus gold medalist Robert Harting voiced his concerns in a social media post last Sunday, pointing to "mistakes by decision-makers" and a "lack of investment in know-how" as contributing factors. 🤐 With the Paris Olympics just a year away, Germany has some serious soul-searching and refocusing to do if they aim to regain their status on the global sports stage. China's Li cruises into last 16 at BWF World Championships - https://lnkd.in/gCH9kZ7B, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Sixth seed Li Shifeng of China swept past Malaysia's world No. 34 Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-10, 21-12 to reach the men's singles last 16 for the first time at the BWF World Championships on Tuesday. The 23-year-old All-England Open champion needed only 44 minutes to win the pair's second head-to-head meeting, revenging his full-game defeat at the Japan Open last year. "Last time against him I played very aggressively, but lacked changes (in tactics) on the court. You cannot win the match if you only attack and attack. This time, I've learned lessons from that defeat and tried to play with more patience," Li said after the victory. The 2018 Youth Olympic Games champion has been enjoying a skyrocketing year, which saw him win two BWF Tour titles and finish runner-up twice. Next up for Li is Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei, who reached the last 16 at the worlds for the second year in a row after overcoming China's Lu Guangzu 21-16, 18-21, 21-19. The 28-year-old Wang knocked out Lu in the same stage at last year's tournament in Tokyo, before losing to Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in the battle for a quarterfinal berth. Source
