👏 👏 Creating a Fife Whisky Region now would provide a clear identity, marketing advantage, and a sense of pride for local producers and consumers. While the logistical and bureaucratic hurdles are real, the long-term benefits for Fife's whisky-making community and its global reputation outweigh the costs. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second-best time is now. The same holds true for establishing Fife as a whisky region 👏 This version draws more attention to the passion and heritage of the distilleries while emphasizing the unique opportunity to build a distinct identity for Fife now, rather than waiting. The goal is to inspire a sense of pride and urgency in moving forward with the creation of a Fife Whisky Region. https://lnkd.in/ghhfefNA #whisky #fifewhisky #fife

The article in this post pulls together very well the many strands for the argument in favour of Fife being its own whisky region. As it clearly states we at InchDairnie Distillery are very strong advocates for this big step. We believe this will assist in the growth and development of all the fine whisky brands distilled in Fife, many of whom are already on the global stage. Provenance is important to many of our consumers, where does your whisky come from? Answering that question with clarity and simplicity is a a big part of the tool box needed in this increasingly highly competitive market place to build our brands. Todays consumer is curious and hungry for information, it is our role as brand owners to provide that information and to put it front and centre of our branding. Whisky is distilled in many more countries than ever before, the competition is no longer home grown. Countries where they have the freedom to take their own path. I simply do not understand why we in Fife should be denied the right to take our own path in this ever changing and challenging world.
In my inaugural blog post for my new Fife Whisky Tour Website & Day Trip I discuss why I believe my beloved Fife should be allowed to break free from its Lowland Whisky Region chains to become its own Fife Whisky Region. Starring: William Wemyss & Isabella Wemyss of Kingsbarns Distillery and Visitor Centre. Andrew McKenzie Smith of Lindores Abbey Distillery. Ian Palmer of InchDairnie Distillery. Francis Cuthbert of Daftmill Distillery. Mike Aikman of Bramble, Lucky Liquor & The Last Word. Simon Erlanger of Isle of Harris Distillers Ltd. Archie McDiarmid of Luvians, St Andrews. Whisky authors Dave Broom & David Sturk. The Haig, Stein & Bonthrone dynasties, My late father John Gordon Clement. Actors Kevin Costner & late James Earl Jones in The Field of Dreams. Singer-somgwriter King Creosote (Kenny Anderson). Justine Hazlehurst & Karen Somerville of Fife Whisky Festival. What do you think? Would love to hear your opinions on the matter in the comments...

Pulteney Distillery. 🥃 Based in the remote harbour town of Wick, Pulteney distillery was once Scotland’s most northerly mainland distillery and was only accessible by sea. It produces distinctive coastal-inspired maritime malts – one, even appearing recently in Netflix’s global hit, Squid Game. Region: Highland Founded: 1826 by James Henderson Current owner: International Beverage Range ⩥ The core range includes a 12-Year-Old, a 15-Year-Old an 18-Year-Old, a 25-Year-Old, and non-age statement malts Huddart and Harbour. The Coastal Series features malt whiskies finished in port and wine casks. Water 💧 Pulteney’s water is sourced from Loch Hempriggs and carried via a 5.5 mile lade into the distillery. It was designed and constructed by famed Scottish civil engineer THOMAS TELFORD. Stills 🏭 Pulteney distillery’s stills are rather uniquely shaped, featuring unusually large BOILING BALLS and a flat top, a shape which has inspired the design of the brand’s whisky bottles. Worm Tub 🪱 Pulteney distillery is one of only 20 Scotch whisky producers to use an old-fashioned WORM TUB CONDENSER. This type of condenser helps to produce Old Pulteney’s signature robustly, heavy spirit. Prohibition 🚫 Contrary to popular belief, PROHIBITION wasn’t just limited to American shores. In 1922, under the terms of the Temperance (Scotland) Act of 1913, the town of Wick became ‘dry’. Every pub in town was boarded up, and Pulteney distillery was closed for business, only reopening once Prohibition was repealed in 1947. Fun Fact: A bottle of Old Pulteney 18-Year-Old made a sneaky appearance in season 2, episode 4 of Netflix’s global hit Squid Game, when it was enjoyed by the Masked Officer as he studied the surveillance screens. 🦑 Have you ever tried an Old Pulteney? Or visited Pulteney distillery? Let me know in the comments. 💫 I write Scotch whisky content, blogs, articles and educational materials. Whisky giant Chivas Brothers has revealed plans to build a new distillery on the isle of Islay. It will be the first time the Scotch maker, which is responsible for single malts such as Aberlour and The Glenlivet, has had a presence on the island. An application has been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council for a site at Gartbreck Farm in Bowmore with a decision expected by late March. Islay is already one of Scotland's major whisky attractions with 10 distilleries including Laphroaig, Ardbeg and Lagavulin. The oldest distillery on the island is Bowmore, which began operating in 1779 and is currently owned by the makers of American bourbon brand Jim Beam. Chivas Brothers are partnering with Islay Estates on the new distillery, which said it would work closely with the community so there was minimal impact to residents. Planning officials said the whisky makers hoped to make a "significant positive contribution" to Islay.
