Couldn't resist:
1. It's a mind thing: No matter what time you are getting up, you are simply "getting up very early in the morning." Do not complain it's the middle of the night. Do not complain that you're going to bed while the sun is still up.
2. This is your shift and you are ALL IN.
3. Until you are super speedy at editing (read that: 4 years in), get there even earlier than you have to. READING, EDITING, AND REHEARSING as much as you can will make you shine. Don't count on producers to do it: this is YOUR show with YOUR name on it.
4. Mornings are about your audience becoming your best friend. I guess it's 'cause they're in their jammies. But they learn to love and count on you.
5. I vote for one-hour naps in the afternoons, but figure out what works best for you.
6. Rising that early, learn to eat at least a little something. Drink plenty of water and head for the coffee at your local convenience store. They'll eventually start to expect you!
7. This is NOT a punishment. And yes, your social life will suffer a bit, but your friends will adjust as will your significant others.
8. On weekends, (or days off) wake up two hours later than usual (yeah, if it's 3:30 am, so be it)

Good morning, Concho Valley! I actually don’t mind the morning shift at all! I’ve done it for years at a time then off and on filling in whenever needed.
Veterans AM newsies, what advice would you share with someone who just graduated and is taking a morning show position or someone new to the earlyyyyy mornings?

I am literally in a group chat with legal nurses who could be considered “competitors”. We share ideas, talk through situations, ask for recommendations, and offer to help each other when one is overloaded. (We also laugh a lot 🙃)
They are secure in the their abilities, as am I. The real competition is between you and yourself. Are you doing things everyday to become successful?

When you yourself don't know what is going to happen, it piques your curiosity.
This in turn helps you to make the most of the things that you have.

Even though I clearly never had the possibility to work with him, he was and still is a big source of inspiration on the way “I do the things”!
His 14 rules (in my comment below) should be part of the onboarding training of every newcomer in the aerospace and defense industry.
Whether it’s “Founder,” “Head Skunk” or simply “Kelly,” Clarence Johnson made a profound impact on multiple high tech industries with the creation of his 14 Rules and Practices, which serve as a roadmap to drive rapid innovation.
I am told, Kelly used to say that “what we do is secret, but how we do it is not,” specifically referencing the 14 Rules.
We have a lot to thank Kelly for, and on what would have been his 114th birthday, I want to honor his vision that continues to inspire the creation of cutting edge solutions today.

For years I’ve marveled at the intelligence & creativity of Kelly and Skunk Works. There are several of Kelly’s 14 rules that translate to the design community. Is his idea of small teams of high-talent designers, laser focused on the task at hand, free from distractions and process driven checklists to achieve truly life-changing results no longer relevant? Have our architectural design teams ballooned to sizes that hinder progress? Are project teams handcuffed by process and overhead responsibilities? Is the talent density there in new-to-the-workforce applicants to fill positions with high achievers to make this type of team possible?
