Stark warnings on a deepening and more acute shortage of skills for the construction and built environment sector, driven by numerous "mega-projects" and an imminent resurgence in house building. Construction News covers comments from Simon Harris (Randstad) who foresees a perfect storm in 2026, compounding the decline in sector skills which peaked with a combined workforce of 2.6 Million in 2008, but which stood at 2.1 Million in 2023. He concludes, "Employers who want to navigate the next few years effectively are going to have to look at: 🔹 Hiring people from different backgrounds: 🔹 fishing in more diverse talent pools; 🔹 pay[ing] more for skills; 🔹 grow[ing] more of their own talent. They need to focus on apprenticeships and training new hires as well as upskilling existing employees. They’re going to have to move to skills-first recruitment, rather than looking for ‘experience’ above all else. Let’s not forget that experience doesn’t exist for some new roles like green skills or AI-based tech". #warfortalent #skillsgaps #construction #earnandlearn #apprenticeships #builtenvironment #diversity #talentpools
