Exciting developments following my recent trip to Jutland 🎯 Since returning, I’ve been fully immersed in an innovative MedTech project, and it’s clearer than ever how crucial the initial market analysis and business case are for success. These foundational steps not only validate the need for the solution we’re developing but also ensure that we are addressing genuine pain points in the most effective way. By conducting thorough analysis and building a solid business case, we’re able to create a product that not only delivers real value to users but also has the potential for growth and scalability. It’s fascinating to see how early insights can shape the entire direction of a project. 💡 If you’re tackling similar challenges or have experience in this area, I’d love to connect and exchange ideas! More updates to follow soon. #MedTech #Innovation #Healthcare #MarketAnalysis #BusinessCase #ProductDevelopment #UserExperience

Why do health innovation projects in the Bergen-region often fail? We have an excellent healthcare system and some of the most highly skilled professionals. Bergen also hosts a strong academic community, with universities, medical colleges, and research institutions all contributing to numerous medical research projects. Yet, despite this, we rarely see successful commercialization and new companies. Why does this happen, and what can we do to change it? Bergen Næringsråd and EY recently teamed up to investigate what can be done to improve this situation. Their report has some great insights, and I’m fully on board with the idea of establishing a health hub for knowledge transfer, as well as creating an “industrial engine” to power the community. With 18 years of experience in the international medical device industry—working with companies like NordicNeuroLab and Holberg EEG, which are now considered success stories—I’ve encountered just about every challenge a medical start-up faces. I’ve made all the mistakes you can think of, and I view that experience as an asset that I’d love to share. Over the next two weeks, I’ll be sharing my top four reasons why I believe health innovations in Bergen struggle to succeed. Here are the headlines: 1. Regulatory expertise is non-negotiable Hire a Regulatory Manager and keep them close. Building strong regulatory competence is key to speeding up time to market, saving costs, and ensuring you create safe, valuable products. This should be your first hire! 2. The academic mindset Academics often focus on publishing their research while pursuing their Master’s or PhD. Commercialization isn’t their goal, and they do not develop in line with medical regulations. This can lead to commercialization delays, higher costs, and greater risk. 3. Is this idea worth pursuing? Not every idea should lead to a medical start-up. Do you know how much it costs to bring a medical device to market? If the answer is no, then maybe think twice before jumping in. 4. You guessed it, MONEY. For the first five years of your medical start-up, your focus won’t be building a great team, developing and selling great products—it’ll be raising capital. Bringing even the simplest medical device to market will cost you 100 million NOK, so you need a rock-solid business case. Stay tuned for more!

True words and important topics. I think a large part of the problem is the lack of knowledge and risk appatite amongst the local investors. I am then talking about the larger investors and not the business angels. This region has historically made money from fish, shipping and oil, which all has been high profit, but also, very traditional industries. A lot of these funds is now invested in real estate and other low risk investments. As Øyvind Gulbrandsen states, bringing a medical product to market demands a significant amount of money and hopefully more investors will do as Kristin Odfjell & Johan Odvar Odfjell and take a special interest in investing in local companies with an agenda to postitively impact our society.

🌟 Now working on the case from last week’s trip to Jutland 🌟 Building on my recent visit to Jutland and the exciting MedTech project I discussed, I’m happy to feel how my clinical background provides a significant advantage in commercialising innovations. With a blend of clinical, technical, and commercial expertise, I bring a unique perspective to the table: 🔬 Clinical insight: - Identifying underserved clinical needs: My clinical experience enables me to uncover gaps and unmet needs within healthcare systems. This insight ensures that the technologies we develop address real challenges in patient care. - Understanding reimbursement: I am adept at navigating reimbursement schemes, ensuring that innovations are not only feasible but also aligned with financial and policy expectations. 🛠️ Technical expertise: - Bridging innovation and practicality: My technical background helps translate complex ideas into practical solutions, meeting both market and regulatory standards. 💼 Commercial strategy: - Crafting robust business cases: I focus on developing compelling business cases that highlight the value of new technologies, facilitating their successful introduction to the market. I’m enthusiastic about continuing to support MedTech innovations. If you’re working on a project and need insight into clinical needs or commercialisation, please feel free to get in touch! #MedTech #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalExpertise #Commercialisation #StartupSupport

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝐶𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑑𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑝𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛—ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒’𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤. Many promising MedTech innovations fall short by overlooking a critical element: stakeholder involvement. It’s not enough to simply engage stakeholders; the key is ensuring the right people are included at every stage of development. ➡ Clinicians should be involved not only at the early design stages but throughout the entire journey. Early on, their insights help align the solution with real clinical needs. Later, they ensure usability and smooth integration into existing workflows. Without their continuous input, there’s a risk of building solutions that don’t truly address real-world healthcare challenges. ➡ As development progresses, other stakeholders—e.g., hospital IT teams—become vital to ensuring seamless adoption within healthcare systems. ➡ Startups bring innovation and agility but may lack the networks that established companies have. By partnering, both sides benefit—established players offer valuable market insights, while startups offer fresh, creative solutions. This collaboration can significantly boost the development process. While different strategies may apply based on your business goals, one thing is certain—collaboration goes beyond sharing technical expertise. It’s essential for success. 💬 Are you working on MedTech innovations? I’m passionate about creating real impact for patients—let’s connect and discuss how we can make a difference together.
