Please see this fascinating speech recently delivered by Professor Olubayi Olubayi. In 2012, I founded Maarifa Education and eventually convinced Prof to join the executive team. We spent many years trying to reinvent education in Africa, something that he had been very focused on when I first met him, and continues to devote his life to. Maarifa’s Mission was to provide quality higher education to as many Africans as possible. It was and remains a very difficult journey on so many levels and for so many reasons. Prof’s speech can make you think about, and potentially rethink, a lot of things. You might also vehemently disagree with his ideas. But for me he is spot on. And his powerful thoughts around mathematics education (unfortunately) kind of sum up the state of African education today (minute 38). In hindsight, I may have had the completely wrong idea. Survival of the fittest is a very real notion among all living things and while it’s nice to try to save the world, and everyone in it, at the end of the day, we have to build on foundations that allow the best and the brightest to succeed wildly. Only then can the rest of humanity build on top of those foundations. Again, not an easy argument to make, and also a highly debateable notion, but I have tried alternative approaches and for the most part have not liked the outcomes. Anyway, the speech is well worth your time if you are interested in, and/or curious about, these topics, no matter where you might philosophically fall on these issues. (Jump to minute five to start)

BSc(Hons) MBCS - Extremely skilled Devops Engineer with 20 years experience in Software seeking Entry-Level Pentester/Red team role.
I am determined NOT to become one of those students. I'm still using concepts every day that I learned in 1998 in an Economics A-Level. I don't 'exam-cram and then forget' - I always aim to really learn the material. And sometimes that means I do LESS well on exams, because you know - actually learning things instead of just memorising it for the exam is much more difficult. Personally, I don't really care about the grade if I get the learning. I wonder how many other people really think like that? #studying #students #college #university #education

Statement from Professor Muhammad Yunus: 07 August 2024, “I congratulate the brave students who took the lead in making our Second Victory Day possible and to the people for giving your total support to them. Let us make the best use of our new victory. Let us not let this slip away because of our mistakes. I fervently appeal to everybody to stay calm. Please refrain from all kinds of violence. I appeal to all students, members of all political parties and non-political people to stay calm. This is our beautiful country with lots of exciting possibilities. We must protect and make it a wonderful country for us and for our future generations. Our youth is ready to give this leadership in creating a new world. Let us not miss the chance by going into any senseless violence. Violence is our enemy. Please don’t create more enemies. Be calm and get ready to build the country. If we take the path of violence everything will be destroyed. Please stay calm. Help those around you to stay calm.”

FLASH BACK OF (2018/09/07) UNIVERSITY Of IBADAN AND US Hurray! The premier and the prestigious University of Ibadan (the first and the best) is 70!! Someone once asked me if she is prestigious because that is where I studied? And I quickly responded to him that a man cannot be separated from his institutions. And in that ,I hold a believe that a man's value in life is usually shaped and sharpened by the institutions that has made up his life; in this context you can not overemphasize the family institutions, the school institutions and the Religious institutions. These basic three stand as the major components( you may as well call it foundations ) of a man's value. However I went further to explain to him in literal terms that you can never know what it is to be a man until you are a man. In essence, those of us who celebrate the premier university mostly do that because of the value that the institution represent. It is because of these values that keep standing her products out in the world, through these values our products in turn add same back to the society. Standing the test of time in reverence to value(even in the midst of suppressing challenges) is of a truth not an easy height to achieve. A unifying entity,an epitome of academic excellence,a hope and character builder,a disciplinarian,i salute you. Happy seventieth anniversary!!! ISN-ODP/FMP: Nebeolism-Igweism (2024/09/07)
