“Coach the client, not the problem”. I’m reading a coaching book that focuses on this premise and I’m seeing how this theme applies really, to all of life. My dad is in the hospital. “Just a cold”, but at nearly 93 years old, there’s nothing “just” about it. Staying with him in his room, I see the various nurses/ doctors/ PTs/ OTs…. They’re all very kind, but not one of them seems to really see my dad. They’ve got their jobs that they’ve been tasked to do (check vitals, get up and move, eat, give meds….) but he is exhausted, and there doesn’t seem to be a team approach to how HE is doing and what HE needs. That’s a litigious society/ CYA soapbox, but the point is if they saw their client, they would recognize that he needs rest (hook up a monitor rather than come in throughout the night to manually monitor and wake him up; give his meds intravenously; give melatonin nightly, not “as needed” which means as requested). How many of us are guilty of this ourselves? Whether in our jobs, with our kids, our spouses/partners/friends…. How many of us really see the person and what they need? There doesn’t have to be a “need” in the market in order for you to be successful. 😱 One of the things that people will advise is to first study your market to see if there’s a need for what you’re offering. I don’t agree with this. I believe that if you’re passionate about something - what you offer, the way you offer it, your passion and excitement for what you offer - you will succeed! Example - you can’t walk a block without tripping over a dentist in McLean. My dentist has a mentor. My dentist expressed trepidation at opening a practice here. You know what that mentor said? “There’s always room for one more good dentist”. And he’s doing WELL! #followyourbliss #followyourpassion #followyourheart #lifecoach #careercoach

UNEMPLOYED? 👇 I discovered a GREAT self-assessment tool that helps you identify your greatest skills, and aligns them with jobs that exist (and lists the degree requirements, job outlook, and salary!)! I actually just took it myself to test its effectiveness. It's legit! It's through the Department of Labor's website. VERY informative with data about the educational requirements that the average person working in this field meets, certificates you can earn, internships available.... WOW! I will post it in the comments so the LinkedIn gods don't penalize me for taking you off their site! The job market is tough right now, but you know where you can always get a job? Working for yourself! Here are some thoughts: 1. Take the MBTI - Myers Briggs Type Indicator. You can find it online pretty easily, and it's a relatively quick assessment. Once you know your Type, you can search the types of careers that people with your Type often engage in. This may give you some good ideas of paths to check out! 2. What have you done most of your life (job title)? What skillset is required/ do you possess from that job? Those skills are very likely things you are good at. How else can you monetize those skills? 3. You may not need to start a business that requires an LLC to start. You may be able to be a 1099 employee (independent contractor) of different companies who use your services on a contractual basis. In that instance, you just need to be sure not to spend all the money you receive, since taxes have not been taken out yet, and will be due at the end of the year. 4. If you are thinking of starting a business, you want to have - a name (needed to register) - to register that business with the county/state/IRS - to determine what capacity you'll be incorporated (easy to google sole proprietorship, LLC, etc. - usually LLC is recommended to keep your business separate from any personal, should you encounter legal issues). And then, there are plenty of groups to join to gain insight about all the things (CRM, website, accounting software, marketing, social media, etc.) that propel your business, and that constantly change. Greed. Selfishness. Total lack of care for others. Boeing - the company that has suffered backlash due to unsafe practices, is laying off 17,000 workers, and their machinists are on strike for increased wages. These lower level folks are striking to make enough money to take care of their families. Meanwhile, the CEO of Boeing collects more than $32 million in overall compensation. That’s his reward for overseeing a company that repeatedly cuts corners to increase profits. I’m reminded of almost 2 years ago, when I was requesting my agreed upon compensation from a local bank for an executive placement. Crickets. That money was VERY significant to me just to make ends meet. Meanwhile, that same banks executives were making in the millions. We all need to earn a living wage. Do better, people. Unemployment, AI, change… I’m thinking a lot about this lately. At times it feels like it’s moving faster than in the past. Like the huge leap college tuition took relative to overall inflation. But it’s not new. Yesterday my best friend and I were in Newmarket VA visiting her dad, and he has all these old photos and articles around the house. One in particular showed the saddlery that his grandfather owned. Can you imagine? His entire life had been devoted to horses as the mode of transport. Then I’m sure he was able to pivot into car seats. But at some point he probably couldn’t remain afloat with the same product. But also, isn’t that beautiful? Progress. And really, you (meant as a generic pronoun) are employed because you add value. So is what you have done still of as much value as ever? If so, 👏 If not, what is it that’s a one-off of what you’ve done that is still needed by (insert customer)? Or what skill can you get up to speed on that will make you valuable? #careercoach #lifecoach #unemployed #jobs
