Week 31 Challenge: ‘Forward Observer’ Historically, Forward Observers would secretly move into a position of observation and would call in indirect fire on the enemy. This mode of gameplay brings that spirit in with a similar twist as the previous ’Sniper’ challenges. Objective: eliminate the opposing player’s mortar or the mortar’s ability to fight by eliminating the opposing Platoon Leader game piece. Setup: Blue player places all obstacle game pieces anywhere on the game boards. Next Red Player, using all available game pieces, places them anywhere in the upper three game boards. Blue player gets only four game pieces (60mm Mortar, ICV, PL, and RTO) and tracks their movements on a separate gridded paper. Special Rules: all blue player game pieces (60mm Mortar, ICV, PL, RTO) are only revealed if they are involved in an attack, or used as supportive fire during an attack, or if the red player’s movement lands on or would pass over those game pieces. At this time, the blue player will place those effected pieces on the game board. After being exposed, the exposed game pieces can return to being hidden on blue player’s next turn. The analysis from Brian Kerg is a pertinent warning on the possibility of a protracted war between great powers, with significant casualties on both #belligerents and #defenders. Excerpt, Brian Kerg, Atlantic Council: //But wars between great powers are rarely short and sharp. They are more often long, gruelling slogs of attrition that tend to expand horizontally, ensnaring other regions in their wake. Of course, it is possible that a US-China conflict over Taiwan could be an exception, that it could be brief and limited instead of protracted and widespread. Still, it’s irresponsible to assume such an outcome, given history. Examples abound, but the historical record repeats this simple but critical theme: Great powers rarely settle military conflicts with other great powers in a neat, tidy fashion. Yet despite career requirements to attend professional schools where #military history is at the heart of the curriculum, military planners continue to chase the unicorns of decisive battles and short wars. Cathal Nolan documents this phenomenon and reveals its hollowness in his masterful The Allure of Battle. Committing the preponderance of security studies to the first phases of a global war of attrition is short-sighted, like a chess player who studies openings but fails to study the mid-game or its closing. None of this is easy, of course. Large-scale war disrupts #societies and #technology in profound and often unexpected ways. But because of this feature and not in spite of it, US policymakers and military leaders must rigorously study and plan for a broad range of implications of a years-long war with China.// #war #geopolitics

Very proud to be showcasing my first article published with the Atlantic Council. "...US policymakers and military leaders must rigorously study and plan for a broad range of implications of a years-long #war with #China." Many thanks to all involved in getting this off the rails, from Markus Garlauskas for onboarding me with the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, to John Richard Cookson and team for the top-notch editing, and everyone in between!
There will be no ‘short, sharp’ war. A fight between the US and China would likely go on for years.

Love this Grainne! We so often focus on what sport psychs can bring to performance in the commercial world but rarely discuss what we can learn from frontline law enforcement, military and high stakes industries like aviation. I heard this presentation was exceptional - well done! Nick
Great to connect, present and see the fantastic work happening around the world at FEPSAC- Congress 2024, especially with reference to law enforcement and military populations. I wonder, we often look at what the world of sports can bring to other industries, but when will we look at what law enforcement / military can bring to those same industries including sport? Thank you to all of you and a special shout out to those who are working hard to support our law enforcement / military populations and wellness work. Some incredible people doing some phenomenal work. With John Heil & Robert Owens, EdD, LCMHC, CMPC, CPSS, CSCS, TSAC-F

Week 25 Challenge - “Reinforcements” This mode of gameplay, both players choose any 8 game pieces to begin with. Every 5th round they receive an additional 8 game pieces of their choosing. Victory is achieved when a player eliminates all opposing game pieces from the board. If this happens before reinforcements arrive then that player achieves victory early. Setup: Arrange 4 game boards in a 2 x 2. Next, place 8 obstacle game pieces as shown in the photo - this establishes the assembly areas for each players’ game pieces. *Optional: the players may divide the remaining obstacle game pieces and take turns placing them in the game area. Lastly, each player chooses 8 of their 48 game pieces to begin with and places them in their respective assembly areas. All other rules remain in effect.
