I have heard this many times from bilaterals that have funded us at Forest Peoples Programme. This crucial report provides concrete #recommendations for action, #bestpractices that can encourage change over time. What cannot be right is that we assume major flows of biodiversity and climate finance from ODA cannot reach the front lines. #partners and #allies have a role in facilitating this wider ecosystem of #capacitysharing and #building. Worth a read and a think.
How in the world can big bureaucratic government #funding agencies like #USAID, #BMZ, #FCDO, #NORAD, and #SIDA support #IndigenousPeoples and local communities' #landrights and #forest management? Some say it is impossible. That only #foundations with more flexible funding can support #rural #grassroots organizations. But a new report from #PathtoScale suggests otherwise. "Localizing Bilateral Finance for Community Rights: Recommendations for USAID" plots a clear and realistic path for getting funds to #local groups that protect #forests and #nature using their #traditionalknowledge. . No one says it will be easy. #USAID rules and procedures are stacked against local groups and written in #jargon only they understand. But concrete examples of where it has worked point to how it can be done. It will take both #policyreforms and using tricks and loopholes to get money down to the ground. Fortunately, this report is full of specific detailed #bestpractices and feasible #recommendations for making progress. (And there are many great colleagues in each of these large agencies who are willing to help.) It could not be more timely. Studies show #Indigenous and community #land and #forest rights can be a cost-effective way to mitigate #climatechange and protect #biodiversity. But to ensure this happens at scale requires more money than #philanthropy can provide on its own. Governments need to step up. With this new report they no longer have the excuse of saying it cannot be done. 📚 READ THE REPORT: https://lnkd.in/gpMwcsC2 👀 Check out a summary of key findings: https://lnkd.in/ge-JaVZX #TenureFacility #RightsandResourcesInitiative #GillianCaldwell

🌍 Indigenous peoples and local communities manage 40% of the world’s protected areas (according to The World Bank), yet they are among the most vulnerable to the climate crisis and environmental degradation. Now, more than ever, community-led conservation initiatives are critical to protecting biodiversity. That's why we are proud to introduce An Equal Share, a new venture by Delphine Malleret King (Ph.D) (Advisor to The Long Run) and Stevie Mann (Friend of The Long Run). This initiative combines fine art photography with community empowerment, with 50% of net sales donated to projects that directly benefit local communities. Their first collaboration is with Ol Lentille Conservancy in Kenya, an initiative that, by January 2024, had funded over 2,000 school meals and covered education costs for 49 children from vulnerable households. An Equal Share is now contributing to these efforts, supporting both people and nature through the power of art. Worldwide, Nature For Justice (N4J) leverages nature-based solutions (NbS) to help frontline communities impacted by the climate crisis. As a social justice non-profit, we create #NaturebasedSolutions projects that put communities first. In the US, we work with BIPOC farmers on #regenerativeagriculture, as part of our Farmer Inclusion Program and across Africa, we partner to help smallholder farmers and local landowners engage equitably in global carbon / NbS markets through regenerative agriculture projects. Throughout, we mobilize blended finance for community-determined NbS projects. By unlocking new avenues for long-term finance and support, these projects can be powerful vehicles for community resilience and climate justice. Today, we are spreading the word about the vital work of environmental NGO Tree Aid, a charity we are proud to support. Tree Aid works with communities across the drylands of Africa to grow trees as a way of alleviating poverty, improving incomes, and tackling the effects of the climate crisis. Communities living along the frontlines of climate change continue to feel its impacts. Across African drylands, temperatures are soaring, weather patterns are changing and vital land is losing its fertility. For the people who live here, the impact of land desertification and increasing droughts are threatening their survival. Trees are a solution. Trees help to reverse the effects of desertification by keeping water in the soil, stabilsing the earth and returning soil fertility. So far, Tree Aid has restored and protected over 200,000 hectares of degraded land. Not only that, but they have also supported people to develop enterprise groups selling seeds, fruits and nuts from trees for sustainable income, and have grown over 30 million trees across Africa's drylands! The Power of Education in Environmental Awareness Education plays a pivotal role in developing this understanding. It is the light that illuminates our awareness of our surroundings and our place within them. When children in rural Sierra Leone learn about their environment, they gain the knowledge needed to engage with it constructively. They learn the intricacies of planting and nurturing crops, understanding that their efforts in caring for the land will be reciprocated with the bounty of nourishing food. Creating a Transactional Relationship with Nature This connection between knowledge and the environment can be likened to a mutually beneficial partnership. Just as a gardener invests time and care into their garden, anticipating a bountiful harvest in return, educated individuals invest their knowledge and efforts into their environment. This transactional relationship is founded on mutual benefit and respect. The children learn to invest in the land with the understanding that their investment will yield tangible returns. Awareness as the Foundation of Education Awareness is the foundation upon which a good education is built. It is the starting point that allows individuals to perceive the potential and limitations of their environment. This awareness empowers children to create meaningful and sustainable relationships with their natural surroundings in rural Sierra Leone. They learn to survive and thrive by making informed decisions that align with the environmental context. Education enhances this understanding, creating a powerful tool for empowerment and growth. Through their education, the children of rural Sierra Leone are a testament to how knowledge and awareness can transform personal experiences and build a harmonious and productive relationship with the environment. #SierraLeone #empowerment #education #agriculture #community #garden
