Starting a new classroom management strategy (not some hack) is butterfly-inducing. 🦋😰 It takes upfront prep, practice, and extra patience to work through the inevitable kinks and pushback from students. And if the current status is already chaos, a new strategy risks even more or it, especially if it fails. But then, when you see it start to click and the classroom tone improves, your teaching life does a 180. An introduction to my new baby steps this year… I’m really trying hard to incorporate practices from PBL and other based learning styles in my new math class this year. Focusing on collaboration, communication, and critical thinking during our small group time. Meshing “Building Thinking Classrooms” by Peter Liljedahl and “Powerful Teaching” by Pooja K. Agarwal and Patrice Bain is a tall task but I believe these methods work very well together. PT- this focuses on retrieval practice, spacing, interleaving, and feedback-driven metacognition (my students’ new favorite word 😉) to make the concepts we are learning stick. I don’t do exit tickets at the end of class I do them the next morning. Low or no stakes quizzes help students keep concepts fresh. BTC- students collaborate and work together to solve complex problems. Starting with Jon curricular activities to build engagement and excitement is key here. During their work, you can be a facilitator of learning now just a deliverer of knowledge. You can give instant feedback and help students in the moment.
