Actually, yes. A good shorthand is: If you’ll need your money within the next year, a cash account is a great place to earn interest (and is easily accessible!). But, if you’re saving for a long term goal, an investing account is your friend. While it involves more risk, it historically outperforms cash with potential for more long-term gains. Money markets are paying the highest they have since last century. Technically, it was 1999, but saying “last century” sounds so much cooler. 😎 This is not a recommendation nor advice. However, I have been reminding my clients to be sure they are getting the best rates on their outside cash holdings. Current money market rates are at 5%. This sure feels better than what cash was paying before, which was basically nothing. Again, not advice, but just mentioning what money market accounts are yielding now. 💰

Pros & Cons of Money Market Funds Pros: Liquidity and Accessibility: Money Market Funds are generally considered as be a cash equivalent and provide immediate liquidity. Access to funds come without penalties, ideal for cash earmarked for use in the next 6-24 months. Safety and Stability: Money Market Funds invest in low-risk debt securities with the goal of capital preservation, even during economic downturns. Competitive Yields: While the purpose of Money Market Funds are as a defensive asset not geared towards high yields, in a high interest rate environment, like now, yields are attractive with some funds offering 4-6% interest. Cons: Limited Growth Potential: Conservative nature restricts capital appreciation, generally considered as not optimal for long-term wealth accumulation. Interest Rate Risk: Fluctuations in interest rates can suppress yields, impacting investor income. Current yields are not guaranteed and will decrease if we see interest rates decline.
