Some things are important every year; others only seem to hit our radar when it’s a significant anniversary – think Bonfire Night versus The Battle of Waterloo. That’s why we refresh and update our anniversaries calendar every year. For what is left of 2023 we have: - The 75th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on Genocide on 9th December - The 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party on 16th December For 2024 we can reach back as far as 1174 and the 850th anniversary of William I of Scotland being captured by Henry II’s forces at Alnwich on 13th July. However, it is far more likely that many will focus on the 110th anniversary of the start of the First World War, or the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the Battle of Normandy. To mark some of these events we will hosting special webinar series and other events. Actually, General Washington did outfight the British. He combined conventional and unconventional tactics with effective strategy and logistics, and outfought British and Hessian forces at places like Dorchester Heights, Trenton, Princeton, Saratoga, Monmouth, Stony Point, Paulus Hook, Cowpens, Guilford Court House, Yorktown, and others. And yes, effective intelligence and counterintelligence activities often enabled the American victories. Appreciate the National Counterintelligence and Security Center for highlighting this topic! On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag of the United States. This decision marked a significant moment in American history, as the new flag symbolized the unity and identity of the emerging nation during the Revolutionary War. The flag featured 13 alternating red and white stripes representing the original 13 colonies, along with 13 white stars on a blue field symbolizing a new constellation. The colors and elements of the flag were imbued with specific meanings: - Red: Signifies valor and hardiness, reflecting the courage and resilience of the American people. - White: Denotes purity and innocence, representing the ideals and principles upon which the nation was founded. - Blue: Symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice, highlighting the steadfastness and commitment to these values in the pursuit of freedom and equality. Each aspect of the flag was chosen to convey the core values and aspirations of the United States, making the Stars and Stripes a powerful emblem of national pride and unity. The adoption of the flag on June 14 is celebrated annually as Flag Day, a day to honor the history and significance of the American flag.
