We are proud and grateful to share our Donor Report for our 2022/2023 fiscal year. At Beyond Capital Fund, our mission has always been rooted in the belief that access to essential goods and services is not just a matter of convenience but a fundamental right that holds the key to unlocking human potential. Throughout India and East Africa, we have dedicated ourselves to nurturing mission-driven companies that share this belief, investing in enterprises that channel their efforts towards improving the quality of life for low-income consumers. Some highlights from the report: 👏 We marked a tremendous milestone in November 2022: the final close of our for-profit sister organization, Beyond Capital Ventures. ✅ We also marked an exit from East Africa Fruits and reaffirmed our investments, including via another investment in Haqdarshak to support the company in their $1M Pre-series A round. We also welcomed to our portfolio Ampersand E-Mobility, which capitalizes on growing support for e-mobility in Africa through producing and managing electric motorbikes and a battery-swapping infrastructure network in Rwanda and Kenya. 📚 BCV’s inaugural Founder Summer School kicked off in 2023, hosting our portfolio company founders for a curated lineup of exceptional speakers, all of whom shared their insights and experiences into the entrepreneurial journey. There's so much more to celebrate and share. Download our Donor Report and learn more at the link in the comments. 💸 At least 1,790 unique #investors were involved in one $100k+ deal or more in #Africa since 2021. In 2023, we recorded 619+ unique investors, a -38% YoY drop, which is very much aligned with not only the drop in overall funding but also in number of ventures raising $100K or more (-39% YoY for both). It would be tempting to think that in a tough investment climate, only those who had invested in the continent beforehand decided to do so in 2023. But this isn’t exactly the case as 47% of investors who invested in a $100k+ deal in 2023 had not invested in one in either 2021 or 2022..." 🌦️ 2023 🌦️ Fewer investors, but no exodus 🌦️ To find out more, check out the latest of our newsletter posts analysing start-up funding on the continent in 2023 👇

Starting today I will be shifting roles from managing our Africa hub to launching a new non-profit entity, the Mirova inclusive transition initiative (“Miti”). My colleague Ritesh Shah will be taking over leading our team in Nairobi as CEO of Mirova’s Africa hub. There couldn’t be a better successor than Ritesh, particularly for the next chapter of our journey scaling clean energy, climate, and natural capital investments on the continent. Ritesh joined the SunFunder team as our CFO back in 2018 when we were transitioning from start-up mode to proof of scale. For all my entrepreneur friends, you all appreciate how critical and difficult it is to attract a mission-aligned, world-class CFO at this stage of growth. Somehow the stars aligned. An operational CFO, Ritesh quickly cleaned up our act, became a crucial business partner to Ryan Levinson and myself, and set us on the path that brought us here today (shout out to Ellen Morris and Stefan Magnusson for the introduction 7 years ago!) I entered the energy access world in 2010 because I love working with mission-driven entrepreneurs that share a vision of an equitable, low-carbon world. (Thank you to Christine Eibs Singer and Philip LaRocco for giving me that first opportunity!) Over SunFunder’s journey growing in lockstep with a new, high-impact sector, we believe that our entrepreneurial lessons learned, relationships and investment expertise (from $50k to $25m tickets) and aggregation role (from crowdfunding days to raising 4 blended finance funds) can create unique value for the sector. Working closely with Impact Finance Services advisory team and Mirova’s team of ESG experts, Miti will capture this experience to support high-impact climate enterprises in emerging markets across clean energy and natural capital (especially those led by local and women teams). Entrepreneurs- we’ll help you access networks, expertise and the right type of capital (and we’ll be practical about it). Catalytic funders- we’ll help you efficiently allocate catalytic capital through a commercial lens that aligns with the needs of enterprises. A special thank you to Anne-Laurence Roucher, Jerome Lelu, Philippe Zaouati and Raphael Lance for supporting my intrapreneurial ambition to launch Miti! (The photo is a throwback to our 2019 team retreat).

Head of Legal and Compliance - Africa | Tax and Corporate Commercial Lawyer | Venture Capital | CatalyzU Fellow
Africa's numerous challenges are opportunities in disguise. We need courageous entrepreneurs to tackle these problems and capital allocators who can deploy funds effectively and efficiently. In this regard, I am delighted to share that I have recently completed the CatalyzU Venture Capital Advanced Fellowship! This program provided a front-row seat to learning from some of the best VC capital allocators on the continent. CatalyzU is undoubtedly shaping the next generation of non-technical industry leaders in Africa. A big thank you to Karl Nchite, Luke Mostert, Anthea Hartzenberg, Anne Gichuki and Bertran Strydom for their incredible work! The fellowship was intense but rewarding. It covered a comprehensive range of topics, including VC fundamentals, investment strategies, due diligence, impact, ESG, valuations, legal documentation, cap tables, portfolio management and exits. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Eliud Irungu and Aatish J P., where we created and pitched a hypothetical fund on demo day. Our fund’s thesis and mandate revolved around job creation for young people. Job creation and empowering youth with skills and opportunities to showcase their talent are causes close to my heart. Addressing this existential problem is crucial for Africa's future. A highlight was the impeccable quality of our lecturers: Philani Mzila CDFA (Founders Factory Africa), Jade Buckton (27four Investment Managers), Kamohelo M. and Vuyo Thulani Angoma-Mzini (Launch Africa Ventures), Thaheer M. (Savant), Brian Masondo (E Squared Investments), Mathew Saunders and Ifeoluwa (Awodein) Adepoju (Future Africa), and Nivesh Pather (Norrsken22). If you aspire to join the Young African Catalyst community stay tuned for the next round of fellowships open, including the How to Startup Series where you get to learn from some of Africa’s most seasoned entrepreneurs including Iyinoluwa Aboyeji. In Africa, healthcare and financial inclusion are deeply intertwined. Many people lack access to basic healthcare services due to financial constraints, while others struggle to pay for treatment, leading to financial hardship. This is where healthtech and fintech come in - two sectors that may seem distinct at first glance but are, in fact, complementary solutions to a larger problem. Healthtech innovations, such as telemedicine, data analytics, and digital health platforms, are revolutionizing healthcare delivery, making it more accessible, affordable, and efficient. However, these solutions often rely on financial inclusion to reach their full potential. That's where fintech comes in - providing innovative payment solutions, insurance products, and credit facilities that enable people to access healthcare services they need. By combining healthtech and fintech under the same fund vehicle, we can create a powerful synergy that drives positive change in people's lives. Our specialist team, with deep expertise in both sectors, can identify opportunities for convergence and co-creation, leading to innovative solutions that address real-world problems. For instance, we can invest in healthtech startups that leverage fintech solutions for payment and insurance, making healthcare more accessible to underserved communities. Conversely, we can invest in fintech startups that develop products tailored to the healthcare sector, such as medical loans or insurance products. Our combined focus on healthtech and fintech also enables us to address macroeconomic challenges, such as the high cost of healthcare and the significant proportion of GDP spent on healthcare in Africa. By supporting innovative solutions that reduce healthcare costs and improve financial inclusion, we can contribute to economic growth and development. In short, our unique approach to combining healthtech and fintech under one fund vehicle, managed by a specialist team, allows us to tackle complex problems from multiple angles, driving meaningful impact and returns on investment. Join us in shaping the future of healthcare and financial inclusion in Africa.

We have seen excellent progress from the Alliance for Entrepreneurship in Africa since IFC - International Finance Corporation and partners announced the initiative in 2021.
