EarthLight's Deep Dives The Reality of Reproduction in Space and IVF in Space for Earth Part 4 of 9 By SpaceBorn United’s Dr. Egbert Edelbroek & Marta Ferraz In this Q&A series, we'll dig deeper into the topics presented at the bio-med panel at New Worlds '23. EL: How will the ARTIS prototype be tested and validated in space, and what are the expected outcomes of these tests? SBU: After testing our ARTIS minilab prototype and its subsystems on Earth we will test it during orbital validation missions. Initially with mammalian gametes/ embryos and focusing on testing the minilab subsystems. In subsequent missions we will focus on optimizing embryo health and fertilization success. When the examined embryos are healthy they are reimplanted to enable examining the mouse pups (and in turn their offspring). When all these outcomes are positive we can start preparing missions with human gametes. 🚀SpaceX just redefined catching a flight" on October 13th! SpaceX has once again pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology with an awe-inspiring achievement. On October 13th, they redefined the concept of catching a flight" with their groundbreaking operation involving the Starship's booster landing. This feat was accomplished using their innovative mechanism known as Mechazilla, affectionately dubbed the "Chopstick Rocket." Imagine a scenario where a 230-foot tall rocket is caught in mid-air, without the use of traditional landing legs. That's precisely what SpaceX achieved. Instead of the rocket descending gently onto a landing pad, it was intercepted mid-descent by two massive mechanical arms that are part of the Mechazilla system. This system expertly caught the towering structure, showcasing an incredible advancement in precision engineering. The rationale behind this daring concept is rooted in the desire to boost efficiency. By eliminating the need for landing legs, SpaceX aims to reduce the refurbishment time required between flights and enable quicker turnaround times for their spacecraft. This approach not only streamlines operations but also provides a glimpse into the future of manned missions to Mars and beyond. It’s a feat that blends the boundaries of science fiction and reality, aimed at making space travel more accessible and sustainable. Elon Musk, SpaceX's visionary founder and CEO, aptly tweeted, "No science fiction, following the successful operation. His statement rings true as SpaceX continues to make technological advancements once considered impossible. Behind this historic milestone lies a landscape of challenges. SpaceX has continually faced regulatory hurdles, environmental concerns, and technological obstacles. Despite these challenges, the company presses on, leveraging partnerships and innovative thinking to redefine what's possible in the aerospace industry. As we witness this technological marvel, it's worth pondering what boundary SpaceX will push next. Will we see further advancements in reusable rocket technology, or perhaps new milestones in interplanetary travel? One thing is certain: SpaceX's relentless pursuit of innovation continues to captivate the world and redefine our understanding of space exploration. #SpaceX #Mechazilla #ChopstickRocket #Starship #AerospaceInnovation #MarsMission #ElonMusk #SpaceExploration #RocketTechnology #FutureOfSpaceTravel
