Forget Ping Pong Tables and Wine Fridays, this 1 Habit is Much More Important to Your Culture…
As I prepare for my second child (baby boy), I'm struck by the similarities between the journey as an experienced parent, and the interview/hiring process for seasoned accounting and finance professionals.
We all remember the first time preparing and reading every book to get it perfect, but as you gain more experience the dedication to preparation naturally subsides or becomes second nature. We think to ourselves, we’ve done this before. I don’t need to read another book.
I’ve seen similarities when a seasoned Controller or CFO needs to bring people on. As you gain experience, hiring strategies become more habitual and need much less preparation, but times change, and previous processes often become further validated or discredited with data.
Need proof? Just think how we parent differently from our parents and they parented differently from their parents, and so on.
Improving is so critical in staying up to date with new scientific findings on preparing and raising children, just as the current interviewing/onboarding/leadership strategies are so important to continued success when scaling a team.
Both endeavors demand foresight, strategic thinking, and are never one in the same. In my experience the humble and servant leaders who possess a passion for continuously learning, not just for their own benefit but for the benefit of those they lead, will naturally breed a culture that attracts top talent.
Deploying what you learn will not only showcase your commitment to excellence to potential future employees but reinforce your commitment to those who already work for you, just as your child or spouse will witness.
Don’t become complacent or too proud of what you have always done! Continue learning to attract, hire, and lead top talent who seamlessly integrate and drive your company's success.
