During our webinar with Fix The Broken Rung, we discussed the crucial roles that allies, mentors and sponsors play in creating a more equitable industry. Panelist Hao Tian shared some personal insight into the importance of allyship in her own career; “I do think allyship is very very important in the financial world. I personally experienced the power of allyship through my Return to Bay Street journey because the program is a really tailor-made program. While not all conversations lead to job offerings, building allyship throughout the way is very helpful. You get more people advocating for you, probably behind the door, and that actually increases your chance to getting in a new role, or getting promoted. It’s really a privilege to witness collaborators such as Janet Tiebout Hanson grow in their journey — and her recently published BROAD STREET: My Mostly Bullish Career at Goldman Sachs has set the bar high for us as entrepreneurs. When she and I worked to reshape 85Broads after the 2008 market crash, she showed me by example that there’s room at the table for more than one female leader and in our case that two female entrepreneurs were stronger and more capable than one. I doubt this Bloomberg article will come as any big surprise to most of us. That said, I think the implications are important to explore. Largely white, male, heterosexual, non-disabled spaces have been the norm across many industries, Wall Street included. With the recent legal concerns regarding DEI initiatives attempting to address these disparities, what will equity look like now? Even more importantly, are we powerless to do anything proactively about it? Are we resolved to just letting the opportunity chips fall where they may? I think these are legitimate questions, the answers to which will have far-reaching, perhaps even unintended (?) consequences. I'm not a DEI professional, but I regard the work that I do as DEI adjacent. I think the long term impact of what has begun here will be devastating across professions, including my own.
