How do we protect ourselves from dog bites? Dog bites and attacks have been in the news more frequently over the last few months. The majority of dog bites occur in the home with dogs biting their owners or family members. Why would a dog bite the hand that feeds them? According to Sophie White BVetMed MSc MRCVS, a vet from Veterinary Behaviour Support, many dog bites occur because we fail to understand their warning signs. Sophie explains to Danny Chambers that by improving our understanding of dog body language our ability to read how dogs are feeling in various situations, the majority of dog bites can be prevented altogether. Sophie and Danny also discuss how some common training techniques which have been popularised by social media and TV shows can actually increase dog aggression. #germanshepherd German Shepherd, the globally popular breed rates top honors as an all-round Police Guard, Search, Rescue, seeing-eye and companion dog. #size / #weight Male: 24-26 inches/ 30-40 kg Female: 22-24 inches/ 25-35 kg #history • Dating back several centuries to early Europe, this breed's rootstock was the mountain sheepdog of Germany. • Around 1880 the German army modified this breed for work as a military dog to carry medicine and ammunition. • A German parent club for the breed was formed in 1899. • Later, the military further modified the breed to act as a guard dog for hostages during the two world wars. • As it truly love to work with people, it have become the most popular herding dog today. #characteristics The GSD is both strong and agile, with sturdy and well muscled body that is slightly longer than high. The straight back, deep chest, a slightly pointed rather lean head with a well muscled neck, a strong long 'V' shaped muzzle, high set erect ears and slightly curved bushy tail. #Color BLACK, Tan, Grey, Black saddle on tan #care and #exercise As this breed tends to shed constantly, regular brushing is necessary. Long daily walks on lead are essential. The dog should be kept in large open yard, never in a small confined space. If not kept busy or properly cared for, this breed tends to become excessively nervous, cowardly, mischievous, noisy, and generally uncontrollable and possibly dangerous to handle. #vet #veterinario #veterinarysurgery #veterinária #veterinary #vaccination #gsd #puppy #canine #dogfight #dogsofinstagram #dogs #dog #guard #guarddog #search #rescue #companion #linkedin #linkedinconnections #linkedincommunity #linkedingrowth

Contrary to the common myth, our canine companions experience a more nuanced world than just black and white. While dogs do not perceive the full spectrum of colors as humans do, they can distinguish between various hues. Dogs have a dichromatic vision, meaning they primarily see shades of blue and yellow. The richness of the color spectrum may not be as vivid for them, but it's certainly not limited to black and white. 🌟 Why the Myth Persists: The misconception likely stems from the fact that dogs have fewer color receptors (cones) in their eyes compared to humans. Despite this difference, dogs navigate and interpret their surroundings based on a broader range of colors than the simplistic black-and-white notion suggests #mythbuster #treatunusual #veterinary #veterinaryhospital #dogs #dog #pets #petslife #pet #petlovers #petcare

If ever there was a demonstration for the need for boots on the ground and eyes in the sky, it’s this ⬇️ Spanning seven days in January, a dramatic air and land operation unfolded in Northern Tsavo to help an elephant struck with a poisoned arrow. Incredibly, it all began with a routine foot patrol and a sighting so small, it could easily have been missed by an untrained eye. For the SWT’s eagle-eyed rangers, however, a single drop of pus along a well-trafficked elephant trail sent alarm bells ringing: the shocking use of poisoned arrows is quietly on the rise, and the presence of pus is a tell-tale sign of such an injury. Next came the challenge of finding the elephant. A task easier said than done in a vast, remote terrain, amid the jungle-like vegetation. That's where our Air Wing came in: Armed with GPS coordinates, our SWT’s fixed-wing pilot went on a targeted aerial patrol to try to find the patient amid the impenetrable bush. Amazingly, he found the injured bull, five kilometres away from the original sighting. But there was a complication. Treatment wasn’t possible that day, and the elephant then disappeared into the thick bush. Knowing infected injuries can turn into life-threatening sepsis, the SWT teams refused to give up. Following days of relentless searching, they managed to re-locate him, this time 10 kilometres from the initial coordinates. From there, it was all systems go as the SWT Air Wing ferried the SWT/KWS Veterinary Team to the scene to administer expert treatment at the site. We couldn’t be prouder to work with such a talented and committed team, who persevered at every stage of this operation to finally get the bull the veterinary treatment he needed! Testament to the strength of collaboration, watch the life-saving treatment unfold, then visit: https://lnkd.in/eeEuEtNV to read all the details. #conservation #kenya #veterinary #wildlifeprotection #animalwelfare

Is your dog's endless running a sign of joy or alarm? 🐕🦺 Let's analyse hyperactivity in dogs 🐾 Hyperactivity in our canine companions is a complex subject🧐 Sylvia MASSON, veterinarian and animal behavior expert, sheds light on this delicate issue. Hyperactivity is a disorder that can impact certain canine breeds more🐶. Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, and Jack Russels are regularly cited, although specific research on the frequency of this disorder according to breed is lacking. Hyperactivity is not limited to excessive movement but is rather a neurological disorder affecting the control of emotions and behaviors such as excessive joy 🤩 which can lead to exacerbated reactions. An overly joyful animal may move more than usual, which is normal🐕. The most important thing is the normality of behavioral sequences: will your pet calm down after playing 🎾for example, or lose control of its emotions? 🐾 Stay informed about your pets' health and well-being by following our expert advice for a fulfilling cohabitation! #HyperactivityCanine #AnimalWellbeing #VeterinaryAdvice #AnimalHealth
