One of my first sales jobs at 18 was at Radioshack 🤓 I became an assistant manager and my main focus was supporting my manager and ensuring operations ran smoothly, making his life easier. Everyone needs a strong right hand in their business, we called this the four pillars / legs of the stool. A manager, a strong ASM and two dedicated full timers as the 4 legs holding up the store. What is your greatest accomplishment as a Sales Leader? I used to answer this question by talking about the millions of dollars in revenue my teams have generated for the companies we have worked for. As I look back at my career, I now realize that my greatest accomplishment as a leader is the careers that I have helped launch. As I scroll through LinkedIn, I look at former SDRs, BDRs and Sales Reps that I managed that are now very successful Team Leaders, Sales Managers, Managing Directors, Vice Presidents, or Directors of Sales. I also see the people who didn’t report to me in Marketing, Account Management, Customer Service, Delivery and even HR who I helped with career development in new long-term roles. I now realize this is my greatest accomplishment as a leader because I talked about where they wanted to go with their careers and helped it happen. The past few years I have taken specific short-term positions to help stabilize, rebuild, develop sales strategies, and set policies for sales teams for companies who have gone through recent large acquisitions or have acquired smaller companies. While hiring globally at every level I realized I was able to hire great talent because I talked about career path and have shown the success of former team members and how I build teams where they can be successful and grow within the organization. "I want the best!" How many times have we heard from Operators and owners (mainly in the Healthcare space), "I want the best C-Level leader to lead the (name the) division of our company!"? We've found that each one has a different definition of what "best" means. After placing dozens of these C-level executives in roles, we came up with a few straightforward definitions of "best," and we'll share one of them here. If you're a larger company, with the standard multiple divisions (Ops, Marketing/Sales, Finance, People, etc.) that might each have a few sub-divisions under them, then "best" means a C-Level exec who runs their division just like a CEO would run a company. That's someone who seamlessly leads and integrates all sub-divisions within their division, ensuring the proper communication and workflow are there at all times, within each sub-division, between the sub-divisions, and between their division and the rest of the company. These companies should avoid falling into the trap that so many fall into and hire a candidate who may be elite at the technical aspects of a job but doesn't have the organizational and leadership aspects to execute for the company's needs as a whole. I continually see minimum 'XX' years required... please someone share with me the correlation between number of years experience and excellent job performance!? You won't because it doesn't exist! What would you rather have: Someone with 20 years experience of average performance or someone with 10 years who is an absolute rockstar!?!?
