Is it better to retain control of your product's manufacture in-house, or outsource to a trusted partner? The answer, as with so many business decision is... it depends. Whether it's injection molding of components, sub-assemblies, packaging, machining, or sterilization, many companies are prepared to invest to bring these technologies in-house. The rationale for doing so is understandable: control of the supply chain, quality and regulatory compliance, cost efficiency, lead time management. However, over recent years, with the acceleration of new technologies and techniques, and the increasing pace of innovation, this line of thinking is changing. With each new technology, a new skill set is required: additional hires, additional training, maybe even additional shop floor square footage and investment in specialized equipment. This inevitably means taking a broader view of ROI than simply the cost of production. For devices aimed at niche therapies or audiences, or in their early stage of scale-up with small to mid volume production, the decision is even more delicately balanced. Interested to learn more? As a leader, it is important to think about how you balance product and process knowledge with technical skill sets to ensure that you get the best of both. 👷 While bringing in additional staff to address skills shortages is a good option, the demand in the market currently means that it could take time to find the right candidate. Consistently identifying latent potential in the existing workforce and building skills amongst enthusiastic employees can help to address your skills shortages – with the added benefit of them already knowing the business. Your more experienced employees will have a wealth of product and process knowledge, too, and investing in upskilling their technical skills can help bring the balance you need to speed up, improve, and streamline the manufacturing process. 🌟 Insights from Patricia Lopez 🌟 ❔ How would you describe your journey in the industry, from production beginnings to your current production controller role? 💬 Since joining Nanovex, my role has evolved immensely. I've learned a lot in a short time, thanks to the supportive professionals around me who make each day dynamic and easier. ❔ What aspects of your pharmaceutical industry experience have you applied successfully in cosmetics? 💬 Coming from a highly regulated industry has been beneficial, as I'm accustomed to the demanding standard we now implement, making our production more efficient. ❔ What were the main challenges transitioning from quality to production management? 💬 The biggest challenge was in 2022 when we experienced significant production growth. Managing orders on demand while upholding quality criteria and external pressures was tough, but we succeeded with a great team. ❔ What crucial skills have you developed for effective production leadership? 💬 Surrounding yourself with a team where everyone rows in the same direction and everyone gives 100% is what makes everything work. In particular, thanks to all this, I have developed a capacity for learning and managing stressful situations. ❔ What differences would you highlight between working in the pharmaceutical industry and the cosmetics industry in terms of regulations, processes, and work culture? 💬 Cosmetics have less regulation, allowing more flexibility. However, my preference for clear standards provides security. It's about finding a balance between pros and cons. ❔ How do you drive efficiency and quality in cosmetics production? 💬 It's simple: hard work. Quality and efficiency require many control points, and that means much more work than it may seem at first glance, but over time, we have seen that it helps us in day-to-day operations. ❔ What are your main priorities as a production manager in cosmetics? 💬 Timely order fulfillment while meeting quality criteria remains paramount. Customer satisfaction is key. ❔ Advice for those considering a similar transition? 💬 Lots of work and patience, try to be like sponges. There will be mistakes, but it's okay, everything has a solution. Someone once told me something that stuck with me and I think it's a maxim: "We all have fears, we all have doubts, and we're all afraid to ask, but we've all started somewhere, and we know what it feels like." ❔ Achievements you're proud of as a woman in the industry? 💬 Automating our production system and ensuring seamless workflow. ❔ Message for women aspiring to advance in similar industries? 💬 Don't be afraid, changes will always have good and bad things, but even in the worst-case scenario, you always learn. It's normal to feel dizzy when you want to change course or seek new horizons, but if you've reached the point where you're considering moving forward, it's because "the itch" is there, and it's the best time. Thank you Patricia Lopez for your point of view!

Transforming Biotech Manufacturing: Driving cGMP Compliance and Human Error Prevention for Optimal Operations
📹 Just like in a video shoot, where each role is crucial for a perfect final product, in biotech manufacturing, the synergy between manufacturing staff, support functions, and the quality departments is vital. This collaboration ensures that we can deliver safe and effective therapies to patients who need them most. 🤲 When these teams work in harmony, the results are compliant, safe, and effective therapies: *Manufacturing Staff: They are the performers, consistently following procedures and leveraging their expertise to create high-quality products. They rely on clear communication from both support and quality teams to perform their tasks efficiently and safely. *Support Functions: These team members are the backbone, providing critical resources and infrastructure. Their proactive problem-solving and seamless integration of services like logistics, raw materials, and technical support enable the manufacturing staff to focus on their core responsibilities without distractions. *Quality: Acting as the process 'directors,' they oversee to ensure that every procedure complies with regulatory standards. They provide continuous feedback and documentation, facilitating improvements and ensuring that every product released is safe and effective. 🎯 What 'Good' Synergy Looks Like *Clear Communication: Open and transparent communication channels between all functions ensure that everyone is informed and aligned with the same goals. Regular meetings and updates foster a culture of collaboration and mutual respect. *Shared Goals and Vision: All teams must understand the ultimate goal of delivering life-saving therapies. When everyone is aligned with this mission, efforts are done as one large team, vs in silos, increasing the impact and effectiveness of the work. *Trust and Accountability: Trust is built through reliability and accountability. Each team must trust that others will perform their roles effectively. This mutual trust reduces friction and enhances teamwork. *Continuous Improvement: Embracing a culture of continuous improvement ensures that processes are regularly evaluated and optimized. Feedback loops between manufacturing, support, and quality teams lead to innovative solutions and enhanced productivity. *Flexibility and Adaptability: The ability to adapt to new challenges and changes in the process/procedures is essential. Teams that can pivot quickly and efficiently in response to new information or unexpected issues are more successful. 🎉 Here's to all the heroes in biotech manufacturing who make it all possible! 🔬 #manufacturing #workingtogether #synergy
