In Texas, a homestead exemption is a legal provision that allows homeowners to reduce the taxable value of their primary residence. This exemption can provide significant savings on property taxes by exempting a portion of the home’s value from taxation. In Texas, homeowners can benefit from both a school tax exemption and a general residential exemption, which can help lower their overall property tax burden. The homestead exemption in Texas is important for several reasons. Firstly, it helps to provide financial relief to homeowners by reducing the amount of property taxes they are required to pay each year. Additionally, the homestead exemption helps to protect homeowners from being taxed out of their homes, ensuring that they can continue to afford to live in and maintain their primary residence. Overall, the homestead exemption plays a crucial role in promoting homeownership and providing stability to Texas residents. You should file for homestead exemption between January 1st and April 30th and can do this by reaching out to your local county appraisal district. If you have any more questions about homestead exemption or any other real estate topics, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. CPR News: Relief for homeowners, seniors are some ideas for Colorado’s long-awaited property tax reforms: A bipartisan group has laid out its big ideas for resolving a years-long debate over how much money homeowners and others should pay on their property taxes in Colorado. The state’s property tax commission on Friday voted to make a series of recommendations to lawmakers. These are just suggestions — the legislature still must decide whether to enact them. But Friday’s decisions will likely form a roadmap for what comes next. … In contrast, Commissioner Loren Furman, leader of the Colorado Chamber of Commerce, said that extending current cuts “is one of the most meaningful pieces that this commission could be focused on.” She suggested extending the cuts through 2026, rather than the 2024 date that was originally suggested. Look out for your Truth in Millage (“TRIM”) Notice this month from your county’s property appraiser’s office! It contains info about your property’s value, proposed millage rates and proposed property taxes. It is important for several reasons: 1) Confirm exemptions (like the homestead exemption) have been applied. 2) If you moved from one Florida homestead to another, Florida allows you to transfer some of your accrued homestead tax benefits to your new homestead, which is called the “Save Our Homes” benefit. If you applied for this, make sure it’s reflected in the TRIM notice. 3) Review the assessed value of your home. If the value seems out of line, you can petition the Value Adjustment Board for your county to see if the assessed value can be lowered.

Do your property taxes seem high? Did you know that 30-60% of taxable property is over-assessed? Plus, less than 30% of taxpayers challenge their tax assessment! Protesting your Austin property tax could save you big bucks, especially considering Texas has the 7th highest property tax rate in the nation. How to Protest Property Taxes If you believe your property valuation is higher than the current market value, you should appeal your taxes. When people don’t appeal, the taxing authority accepts that their value is correct, which affects all homeowners in a given area. By appealing the assessed value, we all help keep our real estate taxing authority valuations in line with market value. Some companies can do this for you for a fee, but it isn’t too complicated to do it yourself. 1️⃣ File your protest using the protest form (Form 50-132 Notice of Protest PDF) available from the County Appraisal District. You can also file online to protest your Travis County property tax. 2️⃣ After you have filed, it can take several months for the Travis County Appraisal District to schedule your informal hearing. 3️⃣ At the hearing: The purpose of the informal hearing is for you to present your evidence and facts to support your claim that they have overvalued your Austin home or condo.
