Feel free to tell me I am wrong but over the weekend, I attended my first-ever basketball game, excited to see the Manchester Giants face off against another team, only to find out it was cancelled due to a leak on the court. Very disappointing. But this experience got me thinking. As customers or users of a service, there are countless times when we encounter disappointment. It’s in these moments that businesses have a unique opportunity to show out. These are the moments that test loyalty, the make-or-break moments. When things go wrong, the way a company responds makes all the difference. It’s a pivotal chance to show customers they are truly valued. In this situation, the cancellation wasn’t avoidable, and perhaps informing everyone beforehand wasn’t feasible. But what could have been done differently to turn the experience around and leave the crowd feeling just a little better despite the circumstances? Here are a few ideas that could have added some fun: 🏀 Drills: the players could have done some drills (on the safe half of the court), showcased their skills, or entertained the crowd with trick shots or challenges. 🏀Kids’ Interaction: Inviting children onto the court for a quick “learn to throw” session with the players could have created an unforgettable moment for young fans. 🏀Mini-Game Fun: Organising a light-hearted, impromptu competition between teammates, with the DJ (who was already playing great tunes) as the MC. While ticket refunds might cover the monetary cost, they don’t account for the time, effort, and excitement customers invested in attending. A little creativity and thoughtfulness could have transformed the disappointment into an opportunity to build stronger connections with the crowd. And maybe I’m wrong, perhaps these ideas would have been too much of a hazard. But part of me felt like the easiest option was to simply send everyone home. The movie industry's mantra this year was "survive til '25," after last year's Hollywood strikes derailed production and distribution plans. Thankfully, late-year #movies like MOANA 2 and WICKED, and summer blockbusters like INSIDE OUT 2 and DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE, have helped the business not only survive *this* year, but thrive in some cases. Yet, the domestic #boxoffice was still down 7% through last weekend from the same point last year, and 24% from the pre-pandemic average. Indeed, the new year will almost certainly be better for business, if only because more titles are already on the release calendar. But while the industry eagerly anticipates 2025, it’s 2026 that is shaping up to be the first post-pandemic year to hold real pre-pandemic promise at the box office. At my Substack (link in comments), I wrote about the '26 slate, packed with film brands with proven track records of getting butts in seats. That said, new-to-screen IP like BARBIE, WICKED, and SUPER MARIO have showed that #Hollywood would benefit from building new franchises to sustain itself in the future, as moviegoing demographics/tastes evolve and some of its tried-and-tested series — from Transformers to Fast and Furious — show their age.
