Audio Engineer | Sound designer | Recording Engineer | Game Audio Designer | Mixing & Mastering Engineer | Media Consultant | Audio Broadcast Engineer
What Does An Audio/Sound Engineer Do? Firstly, audio engineers and sound engineers are terms that are often used interchangeably. However, most use audio engineer to refer to recording or studio work, and sound engineer to refer to live concerts and live events. An audio engineer can also be known as a recording engineer. They help with recording, balancing and adjusting sound sources through the use of equalisation, audio effects, mixing, reproduction as well as reinforcement of sound. Being an audio engineer is a creative profession, but they are responsible for the physical recording of projects. Sound engineers will monitor microphones, sound levels, outputs and there are four steps to commercial production of a recording which include recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. The sound engineer plays a crucial part within the music industry. If you have ever been to a concert, you may have noticed the clarity and overall quality of the music. This is down to the engineer monitoring the sound. Sound engineers use their trained musical ears and knowledge of acoustics to generate the best sound quality for various venues. Managing a large mixing board at a live show the sound engineer will adjust the sound in which the audience hears. This can be known as mixing the front-of-house sound, but there are other aspects to sound engineering. Ultimately, there are additional types of sound engineers with specific roles and specialisations. Bear in mind, it isn’t uncommon for all of these roles to be acquired by one sound person particularly at smaller events and shows. An entire team of engineers is a bonus typically for well funded, larger venues or tours. Did you get value? If you find this informative, kindly like, engage and repost. I help empower sound pros to navigate, believe, and thrive in the post-production sound industry | Emmy® Nominated Sound Re-Recording Mixer | Supervising Sound Editor | Founder Mastering Post-Production Sound.
Things no one tells you about post-production sound🎚️🔊🎬 •We never work alone. Collaboration is crucial and key. A sound crew consists of a production mixer, boom operator, sound assistant, sound supervisor, dialogue editor(s), sound effects editor(s), ADR/Group supervisor/editor, ADR mixer, foley mixer, foley artist, sound recordist aka mix tech, sound engineer, sound re-recording mixer. •Our goal is to help tell our filmmakers story with sound. If we’ve done our job well, you will never notice it, you’ll just “experience” it. •We will always want more time to edit and mix your projects. The truth is that budgets keep shrinking. More for less is what it has become. •At first, it may seem like no one will hire you. People want credits (IMDb) but the only way to get credits is to have them. •You will almost always put in extra time that you will not get paid for. We all do it so get used to it. That’s OUR name on the credits so we go above & beyond. •When you finish audio school you start all over. What do I mean? I mean, you don’t go straight to the top mixing the next blockbuster. You got to put your head down and work hard! Learn, network, grind! Get your name out there & credits under your belt. It will take time, sometimes more than we are comfortable with. •Those of us working on high profile TV & film sound cannot show you on social media what we are mixing or sound editing. It’s not until after it’s been released or is online can we usually share. •You will either work for a sound company or freelance and be your own boss. Each has its own pros and cons. •Our industry is small. People talk. Build yourself a good reputation. It will proceed you and be responsible for the good and the bad that comes your way. What will you build? •The industry is a very tight knit small circle. Many want in, only few breakthrough. But once you’re in, you’re in! Stay curious, work hard and be persistent! #postproductionsound #postsound #tvsound #filmsound #postsoundindustry #soundediting #sounddesign #soundrerecordingmixing #mixtech #cinematicsound #soundindustry #masteringpostproudctionsound #audio #curious #persistent #hardwork
