Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that the largest electrified bus depot in #NewYorkState is now operational in #Buffalo, advancing the transition to a clean #publictransit system that reduces #greenhousegasemissions and improves the air for residents in congested urban areas. With 36 overhead charging systems in the Cold Spring maintenance garage and a new sub-station built to accommodate future expansion, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (#NFTA) project will serve as a model for transit agencies around the state to transition from diesel fuel-powered transportation. NFTA plans for the Cold Spring garage to solely support #zeroemission vehicles by 2035. “We are building a transportation infrastructure that is cleaner, healthier and more sustainable, and the Buffalo bus depot is the newest feature of our efforts,” Governor Hochul said. “Our investment in electrified buses and charging infrastructure not only improves the environmental impact of the fleet itself, but encourages New Yorkers to make public transportation their first choice — resulting in cleaner air and a greener future for everyone.” The New York Power Authority (#NYPA) oversaw the design and installation of the overhead charging systems in four bus lanes at the Cold Spring garage over the last couple of years. The bus lanes were reconfigured for #electricbuses and the roof structure was reinforced to accommodate high-tech overhead pantograph dispensers. The new NFTA-owned substation was designed so it can be expanded to allow for full electrification. New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said, “Transitioning municipal bus fleets to clean air technologies will lower emissions and improve #airquality throughout New York State. The Buffalo depot — now the largest electric bus depot in the state — is an excellent example of new charging infrastructure allowing transit agencies to convert from diesel to electric power. The Power Authority is committed to supporting the transformation of the state’s transportation system and helping the state reach its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050.” Electric transit buses have no tailpipe emissions, lower maintenance costs, and effectively reduce the use of #fossilfuels. The transition of fleets throughout the state will help improve air quality and build healthier communities, especially in disadvantaged communities that are typically low-income or under-resourced neighborhoods that bear the brunt of vehicle #airpollution. NFTA received its first battery electric bus in 2022 and has 24 on site today. Twenty-one additional electric buses are expected to be operational over the next two years. The garage’s electrical capacity can currently serve about 50 buses, or half of the depot, and can be scaled up to serve the entire depot. NFTA has a goal of operating a 100 percent zero-emission bus fleet by 2035. 🔻🔻🔻 Click/tap image below to view video on YouTube 🔻🔻🔻

While electrified trains should remain the gold standard for urban transport (heavy rail (subways and regional trains) and light rail (light rail/teams/streetcars) are the best options for moving large amounts of people. Caltrain using the better performance to increase service frequency also shows the key value of frequent, fast transit. maybe Charleston should look more at Rapid Transit options that fit our metro size. (maybe we are trying to look at those as well!) https://lnkd.in/gk6z5xHB

Transportation is a leading source of carbon emissions and many other air pollutants in Illinois, and it is led by personal passenger vehicles. Public transportation is the solution—especially the bus. By moving 40 people instead of 1 or 2 in cars, a bus creates far less emissions per passenger and is more space efficient in a dense urban environment. Every time someone takes the bus instead of a car, there’s less air pollution, less traffic, and healthier communities. However, when buses get stuck in traffic, they’re slow & unreliable. That pushes people to drive and creates more traffic! We must make the bus experience better to break the vicious cycle. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) can set the city bus free, with dedicated lanes and accessible stations that are far faster and more affordable to build out than train improvements. 🚆 BART’s “Fleet of the Future” 🚆 The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Build America Bureau has provided a $544.6 million TIFIA loan to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), paving the way for 775 new railcars as part of a $2.2 billion systemwide upgrade. This project is set to transform the Bay Area’s transit system, which serves 48 million trips annually. Key highlights: ✅ Modernized Railcars: Enhanced safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency. ✅ Job Creation: Hundreds of jobs supported nationwide, from assembly in NY to design in CA. ✅ Sustainability: Lightweight aluminum, regenerative braking, and 100% renewable electric power. ✅ Cost Savings: Accelerated delivery is saving up to $394 million. “Congratulations to BART for implementing the ‘fleet of the future’ that its loyal riders throughout the Bay Area can rely on for the coming decades,” said Deputy Transportation Secretary Polly Trottenberg. “This investment is a game-changer for the community. It will improve riders’ daily commute and contribute to a more efficient, sustainable, and equitable transportation system.” https://lnkd.in/eJn2rWxV #Infrastructure #PublicTransit #Sustainability #Innovation #BetterMobility BART

Philly has done little to create charging options for EV owners who don’t have garages or driveways, and who are thus stuck figuring out how to access the city’s smattering of public or semi-public chargers. However, it now appears that could change. https://lnkd.in/eeKxeij4

Expanding public transportation services is a challenging decision when considering that current ridership levels do not warrant the need for additional offerings. The bus routes and light rail in the region are underutilized, posing a challenge in justifying the expansion of the system, such as with the proposed streetcar line. It will be important to evaluate the demand and efficiency of our existing transportation choices before embarking on new projects. markfreemanformayor.com

What's the Purpose?? Could be a build out for speed calming. Made flush to allow passing for when the bus is there looking at that bus stop. This setup seems to be mirrored on both sides of the road, with drainage nearby. It's a reflective and sequential arrangement designed to enhance safety and traffic flow. Just a guess I can’t tell for sure. 🤔What’s your guess? #transportation #roads #civilengineering #highways #innovation

Hounslow Highways recently conducted a one-day trial of the Kärcher MC 250 all-electric suction sweeper. This environmentally friendly sweeper is powered by an advanced lithium-ion NMC battery system that reduces local CO2 emissions, aligning with our carbon reduction strategy. 🌍 The trial was a unique opportunity, as the sweeper was available in the UK for only three weeks. Hounslow Highways was fortunate to secure this innovative sweeper for a test run and operate it on several roads across the borough. The Kärcher MC 250 is designed for efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. The noise level of the sweeper is pleasantly quiet not only in the cab for our operative, but also for residents in the immediate vicinity. It has a 2.5m³ waste container and can work at transport speeds of up to 60 km/h, thus suitable for covering long distances within the shortest time. Also, the vehicle has a suspended chassis and an ergonomic working area for the operators to ensure that they are comfortable. This trial is one of the many ways that Hounslow Highways is incorporating new technologies that help enhance service delivery and conserving the environment and becoming fully electric! We’re excited to keep discovering innovative solutions and trialling new products to make our industry even better. Together, we hold the key to the future! 💚 #HounslowHighways #Electricfleet #Sustainability #Environment

The major service changes to Santa Cruz Metro are still doable, said CEO Corey Aldridge, even if few of the transit agency's new hydrogen buses are road-ready. Additional maintenance staff and shifts will help turnaround on the current aging fleet’s repairs, and Metro is confident it can complete its service changes by September.
