Video #objectsegmentation has always been a tricky task in computer vision, requiring a balance of quality, speed, and accuracy. But with Meta's new #SAM2 model, real-time video segmentation just got a whole lot easier and more intuitive. SAM 2 builds upon its predecessor by introducing the ability to segment, track, and edit objects across video frames, as well as apply visual effects to the segmented objects. To accurately predict masks across all video frames, SAM 2 incorporates three key spatiotemporal processing modules: Memory Attention, Memory Encoder, and Memory Bank. When applied to images, the memory components are empty, and the model behaves similarly to SAM. For videos, these components store information about objects and previous user interactions within a session, enabling SAM 2 to generate masklet (spatiotemporal masks) predictions throughout the video. SAM 2 was trained on a massive collection of diverse videos and masklets. Alongside the new model, Meta has open-sourced the SA-V dataset used for training, which includes over 50K videos and 600K masklets. Experiments show that SAM 2 achieves significant performance improvements across multiple #videosegmentation benchmarks and #imagesegmentation datasets compared to its predecessor. It is more accurate and 6X faster, with real-time inference capabilities at 44 frames per second. As a unified model capable of executing tasks across various visual media, SAM 2 marks an important milestone in #computervision. Despite occasional challenges in extremely crowded scenes, its ability to handle occlusion and complex backgrounds represents a significant advancement.
