"62% of UK waste comes from construction - mindlessly tearing down and replacing good solid buildings like Smallbrook." #DontWasteBuildings It's a shocking statistic from the take-make-waste approach of most of the property development industry. And that's before we understand the huge damage to the climate, currently tottering on the edge of an unstoppable slide into oblivion, that's endangering our lives today. Most policy makers in the UK are lagging horribly behind the curve when it comes to the climate damage caused by new build development. Some, like The Labour Party led Westminster City Council are leading the way. "Our new retrofit-first policy will prioritise the retrofit and refurbishment of existing buildings to meet future needs over unnecessary demolition and redevelopment, reducing the impact of development on climate change." Birmingham City Council can make a political choice to get on to the right side of history. Fighting in court to promote climate destruction by an offshore owned entity isn't a good look today, never mind tomorrow.
Ringway Reimagined THANK YOU Birmingham Dispatch & BBC for today's top story: "Over the last few months, the Ringway Centre has captured national and celebrity attention. With its demolition recently confirmed by the city’s planning committee - this hasn’t deterred a legal challenge. And now the most talented architectural students are getting in on the act: imagining alternative uses for the building, including as community spaces and exercise hubs. "Another way Ringway: Architecture students have come up with different ways the Ringway centre could be repurposed, as an arts or cultural hub. With the James Robert-designed brutalist building, students from Birmingham School of Architecture and Design have been looking at different ways to rework the building, with gardens, food courts and playgrounds included. Check out their ideas here - BBC link below. Congratulations to all the students involved! Transforming a 43,606-square-foot facility into a modern elementary school is no small feat. Especially when it involves undoing years of ad-hoc renovations. Kroeschell’s team took on the challenge of renovating an aging school in Colorado, initially used for trade-based education. With limited as-built documentation and outdated architectural plans, we meticulously navigated the complexities to bring the facility up to code. Every corner was touched, every detail considered. The result? A safer, more functional learning environment that meets today's standards. Learn more about our approach to facility renovations and how we ensure projects are completed on time, every time. #Construction #FacilityManagement #Education #BuildingRenovation #ProjectManagement

Educational design has a profound impact on learning environments as it influences student mood, learning outcomes, and overall well-being. Elements like adaptable learning spaces, biophilic design, vibrant colour and carefully planned lighting are crucial in establishing ideal educational settings that support both academic achievement and student wellness

Project Look Back: Lawrenceburg Civic Park In 2019, MKSK transformed a former asphalt parking lot into a green and vibrant public space, for the City of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Celebrated as a regional destination and center for the community, the new Lawrenceburg Civic Plaza dramatically represents the once fragmented vehicular landscape into a unified series of settings for people, nature, and programming. Initial planning and urban design studies looked beyond the edges of the site and explored potential impacts and recommendations for future development within the emerging “entertainment district”. The composition of form, materials, and flora is informed by and responds to the southern Indiana Ohio River corridor landscape—the flow and currents of the river, the iconic native limestone found throughout the region, the movement of people walking, running, and playing through and within the space, and the waves of sound that stream from music, voices, and migrating birds and wildlife that participate and animate this urban context. Programming for the park includes a series of activities ranging from individual seating to large community concerts and farmer’s markets. The transformation from a car-dominated, impermeable surface parking lot to a green urban park space promotes a sustainable transition for the City of Lawrenceburg and its residents—a significant investment in the future of downtown Lawrenceburg—socially, ecologically, and economically. NEWS: The University of California, Berkeley broke ground in November of 2023 on the $136.8 million Undergraduate Academic Building. Designed by LMN Architects and TEF Design, the 78,000-sf project will offer more than 45,000 asf of modern learning space including 27 general assignment classrooms, informal study areas, and advising offices for College of Letters and Science. The technology-enabled facility will include flexible instructional venues of varying sizes to support a range of pedagogical styles. Integrating a five-story wing and a three-story wing, the L-shaped structure will be the first mass-timber development on campus. External circulation corridors on all levels will overlook a rooftop terrace sited atop a 400-seat auditorium. Constructed partially below grade, this dynamic educational forum will incorporate ‘turn to team’ seating to enhance interaction and collaboration. A landscaped entrance plaza will accommodate the high volume of students during class change times, with an ADA-accessible pathway providing universal access to the roof terrace. Targeting a minimum of #LEED Gold sustainable design certification, the all-electric building will feature a sophisticated envelope integrating glass, metal, and precast concrete panels. Large windows will supply ample natural light and ventilation to interior spaces. Plant Construction Company, LP is acting as general contractor with occupancy anticipated in 2026. ________________ Tradeline 2024 Spring Conference Schedule: Research Facilities 2024 (April 8-9 in Boston) University Science & Engineering Facilities 2024 SPRING (April 11-12 in Boston) University Facilities 2024 (May 6-7 in San Diego) MORE INFO HERE: https://lnkd.in/gJGGvp_f _________________ https://lnkd.in/gfkJJRTv #highereducation #STEM #laboratory #buildings #construction #projectmanagement #architecture

We're thrilled to announce our new project - 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥! ASALI is proud to be at the forefront of this transformative initiative, serving as the Client Representative & Engineering Design firm for this monumental project, located in Ebder, Irbid, spanning a built-up area of 7,000 square meters, contains 24 classrooms and 4 kindergarten rooms, and has all the necessary facilities, including computers and laboratories, and health units. This project supported by the Royal Hashemite Court, underscores a collective vision to propel our country forward through education and infrastructure development. It's a testament to our shared commitment to progress and prosperity. ASALI’s approach to the school design was to create modular standards by using prefabricated materials or by defining architectural patterns, making the construction easier and more functional, and also providing rhythm and identity to dialogue with its context and surroundings for flexible combinations. The school is the first of its kind in the Kingdom in terms of the nature of construction and the quality of materials used, pointing out that the area of one classroom is about 67 square meters, which in this case means that there is plenty of room for students in these classrooms so that the student can practice all school activities with ease. At this project lies our commitment to sustainability, evident in every facet of its design. Whether through the incorporation of green spaces indoors and outdoors or the inclusion of courts promoting outdoor education and leisure, sustainability is intricately woven into our planning. This approach not only fosters a supportive atmosphere for students but also reflects our dedication to conscientious resource management, ensuring a legacy of environmental responsibility for generations to come. Modular Public Girls Secondary School is equipped with modern and advanced air conditioning systems, the classrooms have interactive boards equipped with all modern supplies, describing it as a distinguished educational edifice, explaining that it is one of the royal honors that will improve the level of education in the region in particular and in the district in a significant way. At ASALI, we're honored to play a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. The Modular Public School project represents a synergy of innovation, empowerment, and sustainability. #architecturedesign #modular #precast #schooldesign #construction #engineering #urbanplanning #interiordesign
