How many people have you killed? As a long-time veteran advocate, I understand the frustration and insensitivity that often accompanies this question, particularly for combat veterans. While this inquiry may arise from ignorance rather than malice, its impact can be deeply hurtful. Veterans carry the weight of their experiences, and reducing those experiences to a mere number undermines the complexity and depth of their service. It's crucial for veterans to recognize that they are not obligated to respond to such inquiries. Prioritizing your mental and emotional well-being is paramount. Establishing a firm boundary by stating, “That’s not something I discuss,” can effectively communicate that the topic is not up for discussion. For those who choose to enlighten others, a response like, “That question can be upsetting for many veterans,” can gently steer the conversation towards understanding why such queries are inappropriate. Above all, veterans should feel empowered to steer the dialogue towards honoring their service and focusing on their personal journey of healing. Let’s ensure that conversations with veterans are respectful, supportive, and centered on their well-being. #Veterans #PTSD
