Scientists are sounding the alarm about rising global temperatures and the impacts they have on biomes on land and in the sea. Global ocean surface temperatures have soared again following nine consecutive “hottest months” records in a row. This series of events is causing irreparable damage to the ocean, our planet’s largest natural carbon sink, and threatens yet another “mass coral bleaching” event, which can lead to the collapse of fragile reef ecosystems. The ocean cannot sustain prolonged bleaching periods and will continue to deteriorate unless significant changes are made. Reuters https://reut.rs/3vbYhQH #oceans #climatechange #coralbleaching

🌍 New study shows that Atlantic Ocean currents may be on the verge of collapse, potentially plunging Europe into a deep freeze. This could lead to a dramatic drop in temperatures and disrupt global weather patterns. The impact of a collapse would be severe and difficult to adapt to, with potential worldwide consequences. The million-dollar question remains: when will this happen? #ClimateChange #AtlanticOcean #GlobalWeather #AMOCCollapse #EuropeFreeze

As we said before In 2028 it is the most critical point of climate change of 2.0 C temperature that means animals, nature, and human life on the planet do not adapt and can survive. There is no reverse to destroyed biodiversity and there is no planet B. We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it. Earth on Verge of Five Catastrophic Climate Tipping Points, Scientists Warn: Many of the gravest threats to humanity are drawing closer, as carbon pollution heats the planet to ever more dangerous levels, scientists have warned. From a report: Five important natural thresholds already risk being crossed, according to the Global Tipping Points report, and three more may be reached in the 2030s if the world heats 1.5C (2.7F) above pre-industrial temperatures. Triggering these planetary shifts will not cause temperatures to spiral out of control in the coming centuries but will unleash dangerous and sweeping damage to people and nature that cannot be undone. "Tipping points in the Earth system pose threats of a magnitude never faced by humanity," said Tim Lenton, from the University of Exeter's Global Systems Institute. "They can trigger devastating domino effects, including the loss of whole ecosystems and capacity to grow staple crops, with societal impacts including mass displacement, political instability and financial collapse." The tipping points at risk include the collapse of big ice sheets in Greenland and the West Antarctic, the widespread thawing of permafrost, the death of coral reefs in warm waters, and the collapse of one atmospheric current in the North Atlantic. Sea Surface Temperature is still on the rise. Oceans absorb 90% of the heat from climate change — here's why record ocean temps are so harmful Oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess heat caused by climate change. Oceans are hitting record high temperatures. The global average sea surface temperature hit an all-time record high of 69.73 degrees Fahrenheit on July 31, according to a data set maintained by Copernicus, the the Earth observation component of the European Union's Space program, which goes back as far as 1979. Record ocean temperatures cause stronger storms, displace and kill fish populations, stress coral reef populations, turbocharge the growth of harmful algal blooms and in the long-term, cause sea level rise. "The oceans do a lot of the work in reducing the level of warming," Baylor Fox-Kemper, professor of earth, environmental, and planetary sciences at Brown University, told CNBC. "Over 90 percent of the excess energy on earth due to climate change is found in warmer oceans, some of it in surface oceans and some at depth."

COURTHOUSE NEWS: Earth saw its hottest day on record two days in a row Greatly above-average temperatures in Antarctica have contributed to the back-to-back daily records. By Christina van Waasbergen, Courthouse News Service Monday marked Earth’s hottest day in recorded history — breaking a record only set the day before, according to data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. Earth saw a record-high average daily temperature of 62.87 #Extremeweather

Irreversible and driving factor in climate change. Humanity is on red alert, but doesn´t really care: "Sandia's data analysis revealed a 20% to 35% decrease in total reflectivity over the Arctic summer. According to microwave sea-ice extent measurements collected during the same period, one-third of this loss of reflectivity is attributed to fully melted ice." The other two-thirds of the loss in reflectivity is likely caused by the weathering of the remaining sea ice. "The key discovery here is just how much the weathered ice is reducing reflectivity," Kaczmarowski added. Weathered ice refers to the remaining sea ice, which can be thinner and may contain melt ponds." https://lnkd.in/dK8DF6JY

Whatever happens, we know huge change is coming. How we live. Where we live. How we travel. What we consume. How much we can consume. Are you prepared for change? ‘The crisis facing the continent has widespread implications. More than 40 nations are signatories of the Antarctic Treaty’s environmental protocol, which is supposed to shield it from a host of different threats, with habitat degradation being one of the most important. The fact that the continent is now undergoing alarming shifts in its ice covering, eco-systems and climate is a clear sign that this protection is no longer being provided. “The cause of this ecological and meteorological change lies outside the continent,” added Siegert. “It is being caused because the rest of the world is continuing to emit vast amounts carbon dioxide. “Nevertheless, there is a good case for arguing that if countries are knowingly polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases, and Antarctica is being affected as a consequence, then the treaty protocol is being breached by its signatories and their behaviour could be challenged on legal and political grounds. It should certainly make for some challenging meetings at the UN in the coming years.” The Guardian https://lnkd.in/exBtQ9Em
