Our "Leaders of tomorrow" conference has officially kicked off in Banja Luka with Vladana Grabež speaking about "Interdisciplinary research in food production" 👇 "Research on meat quality is crucial in understanding pre-mortem and post-mortem processes, including chromatographic analysis of meat with a focus on fatty acids. Additionally, I am researching muscle cells to advance knowledge in this field. In Norway, we face the challenge of having only 3% arable land, which forces us to optimize resources. In the poultry industry, it is necessary to increase calcium intake by 15%. One potential approach is the use of mussels as a source that can provide 50% of the required calcium for poultry. This is significant because, although we have little arable land, Norway has an extensive coastline and developed aquaculture. Another potential solution from aquaculture is feeding herbivores with seaweeds. Seaweeds are among the most diverse plants in the world in terms of nutrients, making them ideal for this purpose." We are thrilled to announce an exciting update! Supported by Syngenta Ukraine, we have initiated a new phase in our project aimed at aiding small and medium-sized Ukrainian #farmers whose lands have been adversely affected by military activities. We are especially grateful to Oleksandr Kravchuk for his leadership and unwavering support during these challenging times. In five regions of Ukraine, our British-Ukrainian team led by Olena Melnyk has collected #soil samples. The research includes field measurements using a portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) device and laboratory studies to determine potentially toxic heavy metal elements, pH, cation exchange capacity, base saturation, particle size distribution, and more. Currently, our colleagues led by Prof. Volodymyr Trotsenko from Сумський національний аграрний університет (Sumy National Agrarian University), are analyzing these samples. Most importantly, the creation of tailored remediation recommendations will be conducted by the scientific group CYFE together with our fantastic colleagues from Royal Agricultural University, Mark Horton, and Nicola Cannon. We also highlight our colleagues from Berner Fachhochschule BFH, Jan Grenz and Mariana Melnykovych, who will contribute to developing the #sustainability strategies of the project. There is much work ahead, and we are thrilled to turn a new page in our project together with Syngenta! https://lnkd.in/eydb-Sx3 #SustainableAgriculture #AgriTech #EnvironmentalRestoration #SwissInnovation #FarmersFirst #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction

For the past two days EATIP organised its Annual General Meeting in Brussels, a key moment to remind EATiP's mission to promote and support research and innovation for the benefit and development of a sustainable European aquaculture sector. Some key facts, and save the date for upcoming seminar 👇 💪With its work, EATIP has the capacity to influence topics of research calls financed by the European Commission, a very welcome effort to ensure that #aquaculture in all its aspects gets the science it deserves. ✅In its messages, EATIP stresses the need to asses the benefits for society of concluded research projects, through KPI metrics and other social and economic measurements. Research and innovation financed by the European Commission must "breach the science/society barrier", unlocking the potential of EU aquaculture and bringing it out of its current stagnation of production situation. 🐟EATIP also consolidates the aquaculture community and facilitates collaborative initiatives across Europe, e.g. through the recently established #SmartCircularAquaculturePartnership, seeking to promote inter-regional innovation transfer. 📝a series of upcoming digital seminars arranged for the EATiPs Mirror Platforms will introduce aquaculture clusters to their peers and member enterprises with the aim to provide insight into cluster competences and capacities, and to stimulate bilateral or interregional cooperation. 🗓️The first seminar will be hosted on June 26th by the NCE Aquatech Cluster, and you can register at this link https://lnkd.in/e8rsEF6u

🌱 Policy Brief "Regionalization of agricultural production in Ukraine" The consortium "Agricultural Outlook Ukraine" (Polissia National University, National University of Life and Environmental Sciences, Center for Food and Land Use Research at the Kyiv School of Economics) has prepared new Policy Brief. Summary: • K-means Method for Region Clustering Several approaches to clustering were tested, and the most effective one was chosen. The K-means method allowed for the determination of optimal clusters to improve the accuracy and detail of agricultural production forecasts. • Obtained Clusters: North-Center: Chernihiv, Sumy, Poltava, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Cherkasy, Volyn, Rivne, Chernivtsi oblasts. West-South: Lviv, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts. Center-East: Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Zakarpattia oblasts. South-East: Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson oblasts. • Key Differences Between Clusters: North-Center is characterized by stable grain yields. West-South stands out for its high yield of rapeseed and soybeans. Center-East has high potential for growing corn and sunflowers. South-East faces the greatest challenges due to ongoing hostilities, which affect agricultural productivity. 📄 Read the full text (ENG): https://lnkd.in/d-p3pAhP

#LAMASUS_EU is excited to share key insights from the second Stakeholder Board Workshop that was held in March 2024! Tassos Haniotis, former director for Strategy and Policy Analysis at DG AGRI and Senior Guest Research Scholar at International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), provided a comprehensive overview of the economic dimensions of agriculture, and recent changes: the evolution of commodity price cycles (e.g. the recent surge in food prices), the disparity in energy prices in the US and the EU, the implications of the war in Ukraine and ensuing analytical uncertainties. Moreover, Tassos emphasized the importance of monitoring soil outcomes, which is currently overlooked in current practices, especially as it is linked to water quality, health and biodiversity. Tassos reiterated the need to integrate different perspectives into rigorous impact analysis to inform quantitative targets in agricultural policy and the need to integrate different visions instead of impact analysis that is limited to prefixed ideas. Stakeholders together with Tassos discussed the influence of Ukrainian grain on the EU food market, the gap between consumer and producer prices, and the importance of assessing the EU agricultural production in the global perspective as changes in crops will likely affect the world-wide supply.
