In the South, where more than half of all Black Americans live and where the health outcomes regularly rank among the worst in the country, DEI programs are being eliminated in medical schools. Mississippi has the worst health metrics with 1.1 million Black people and only 660 Black physicians. Two state representatives have introduced separate bills to restrict how universities could spend money on DEI initiatives. In March, the University of Florida eliminated all DEI programs and terminated jobs related to those efforts. In Alabama, lawyers and school leaders are grappling with a bill signed the same month by Republican Gov. Kay Ivey that bans DEI programs in public schools, state agencies, and universities starting Oct. 1. “We have to be very, very careful,” said Richard deShazo, who teaches at the University of Alabama’s Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine in Birmingham and used to chair a committee that raised money for Black medical school students. “You cannot raise money for Black kids. You have to raise money for medical students,” he said. Link to full article: https://lnkd.in/exuWAxQg

When you care about something, you must speak on it to preserve it. As chairperson of the Achieving Academic Equity and Excellence for Black Boys (AAEEBB) advisory council, I appreciate my #AAEEBB colleagues and community offering public comment at the recent MSDE board meeting. With a topic as pressing as our boys, it is critical that there are stakeholders lending their voices to share and contextualize the investment, impact, and importance of this area of work. https://lnkd.in/eB--mpbE

This is the type of response and engagement needed.
The opposition uses terminology to denigrate and demean our efforts to make this country and higher education more just. I’m angry, but not distracted, and more of our leaders must share in this outrage if we are to turn this so-called (by one of the orchestrators of dismantling efforts) “counter-revolution” around. I’m from the generation of Black folks that understood the fight, developed various strategies of resistance, built grass roots movements and coalitions in the absence of billionaires and if we have to do it again—we can, but right now we need outreach to our communities and we have to help them understand this is not just a higher ed fight. Thank you Mr. Smith for using your voice.

Empowering Black Excellence: The Intersection of Education and Philanthropy Deondra Rose, Ph.D.'s new book, The Power of Black Excellence: HBCUs and the Fight for American Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2024), and @mikebloomberg's transformative $600 million gift to HBCU medical schools spotlight the profound impact of investing in Black excellence. Dr. Rose, a distinguished scholar at #DukeUniversity, explores how HBCUs have served as vital incubators for Black Americans to acquire the knowledge, skills, and sense of community necessary to build successful careers and drive societal change. Her book is a call to action and a celebration of the incredible achievements of HBCUs and their students. Rep. Alma Adams, U.S. Representative, notes that this work "underscores the incredible history of HBCUs and the urgent need for a historic reinvestment to ensure their continued success." Bloomberg’s historic donation is a tangible commitment to this vision. By providing scholarships, enhancing facilities, and supporting faculty development, his gift addresses the financial and systemic challenges faced by HBCU medical schools. It’s an investment not only in Black medical students but also in the future of healthcare, aiming to increase the number of Black doctors and improve health outcomes for Black communities. As James E. Clyburn, U.S. House of Representatives, emphasizes, “understanding the pivotal role of HBCUs is essential to appreciating how these institutions prepare the next generation of leaders.” Dr. Rose’s scholarship and Bloomberg’s philanthropy underscore the critical intersection of education and equity. They remind us that supporting HBCUs is essential to building a more just and inclusive society that celebrates Black excellence. Theda Skocpol of #HarvardUniversity observes, “The Power of Black Excellence offers compelling insights for policymakers and citizens into how education can propel the public good.” The future depends on our commitment to building on this momentum and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. 🎒 NEW CASE STUDY: The Black Mothers Forum (BMF), established in 2016 to combat institutional racism in Phoenix-area schools, responded to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic by creating a network of microschools. With Black leadership and a focus on racial justice, BMF fills a unique niche in a region where Black families are often underrepresented. In 2022, CRPE documented BMF's efforts to launch these microschools. Our newest case study from Travis Pillow and Eupha Jeanne Daramola revisits Black Mothers Forum, with an eye toward the pedagogical tensions and questions of sustainability. From a single location, the BMF’s network has grown to five microschools across two locations, with plans to start more microschools in the 2023-24 school year. Arizona’s school funding laws provide support for these microschools to operate, but are they sustainable? Learn more:

At HBCU Prep School, we’re on a mission to bring empowering and authentic stories of the Black experience into homes and classrooms everywhere!
In October 2023, the U.S. Department of Education notified 16 states that they had underfunded their historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) by $12 billion compared to their predominantly white counterparts. By law, these institutions are supposed to be funded equitably. The Morrill Act of 1862 provided states with federal land that could be sold to support the colleges (obviously only serving white students, as this was passed before the Emancipation Proclamation). Under the 2nd Morrill Act of 1890, states choosing to open a second land-grant university to serve Black students were required to provide an equitable distribution of state funds between their 1862 and 1890 land-grant institutions. In 1891, Florida A&M University was designated the state of Florida's land-grant institution for African Americans. From 1987 - 2020, nearly $2 billion was withheld from Florida A&M by the state. Over the last 33 years, these funds could have supported vital infrastructure projects, student services, and educational opportunities for students. The federal government has asked states to make up for the funding disparities, but no states have plans to do so. 🎥 @everydayisjuneteenth * * * * * * * * * #hbcuprepschool #reparations #moneyowed #stolen #racism #whiteprivilege #government
