How do we nurture a culture of innovation? Culture is the sum of the practices, values, beliefs, customs, and artifacts of a community or society. As one of my mentors once said, “Culture is how people get through their day.” When we honor our corporate partners and the work they empower with the Naval Postgraduate School, we support: -The practice of engaging with industry in non-transactional relationships. -The value of collaboration across the DoD and the broader innovation ecosystem. -The belief that no one innovates alone. -The custom of recognizing those who are making a difference. -Creating new artifacts through new prototypes, processes, and concepts. ✨The Unsung Hero: My 17 Years Working with the EP3E in the Navy. What does it do???? 🛬For the past 20 years, I've been honored to serve in the Navy, and a huge chunk of that time was spent working in different roles such as Operations, Project Management, and in my early years as an Electronics Technician with an incredible aircraft - the EP3E. For those unfamiliar, the EP3E, or Electronic Patrol Aircraft 3E, is a variant of the P-3 Orion that plays a critical role in electronic reconnaissance missions and built by Lockheed Martin in the 1960’s and 1970’s still going strong today. 👀While the F-18s and helicopters often grab the spotlight, the EP3E is a silent guardian, gathering intel that goes directly to shaping mission success. It's a multi-intelligence gathering aircraft, essentially a high-tech flying eye in the sky that uses powerful receivers and antennas to snag electronic signals. Think radio communications, radar signals. 📊The gathered intel is then analyzed by our amazing crew - linguists, cryptographers, and technicians working together to decipher the data and turn it into actionable intelligence for key regional stakeholders. This can be anything from real-time threat warnings to situational awareness for air and submarine warfare. 😁Every mission on the EP3E is a thrilling exercise in teamwork and national security. We may not have gotten the dogfights or dramatic landings, but the work we do on the EP3E was absolutely crucial. If you ever have the chance to learn more about electronic reconnaissance and the vital role it plays, I highly recommend it! This plane may be getting put to bed soon, but her contributions will never be forgotten. When I transitioned out of the Air Force, I faced the uncertainty of translating my military experience into the civilian sector. I had an associates in Air and Space Technology Operations with a complicated job (and job title) that didn’t translate easily. 🚀 Today, HUGE changes are shifting the focus to Developing People, Generating Readiness, Projecting Power, and Developing Capabilities. Key highlights include: - The introduction of technical tracks and the reintroduction of warrant officers in IT and Cyber fields, empowering our Airmen with cutting-edge skills. - Large scale exercises and mission-focused training to bolster operational readiness. - The elevation of AFCYBER to a standalone Service Component Command, underscoring the pivotal role of cyber missions. - The creation of the Space Futures Command, geared towards innovation and strategic development in space operations. Thales has signed a 1.8-billion pound contract to improve the long-term availability and resilience of the Royal Navy’s sonar and sensors. The 15-year Maritime Sensor Enhancement Team contract focuses on equipment availability and prediction of problems through artificial intelligence-assisted data collection. “Thales is delighted to strengthen our century long partnership with the Royal Navy, and support its vital role in defending the UK and keeping the world's critical sea lanes open," Chairman and CEO of Thales in the UK Alex Cresswell said. Bae Systems to Deliver Advanced Microelectronics to U.S. Defense Industrial Base. The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research & Engineering’s Trusted & Assured Microelectronics program through Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane Division’s Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S2MARTS) Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) vehicle has awarded BAE Systems’ FAST LabsTM Research and Development organization a $22 million contract. An interesting and exciting development for the USAF. I'd imagine the USAF has either conducted or still conducting a thorough assessment of the USAF's current cyber and IT capabilities and identification of specific areas where Warrant Officers could make a valuable contribution. Aside from the obvious "WOBC" curriculum development(s) (hopefully containing likely subjects such as Advanced Cyber Warfare Tactics, IT Infrastructure Management, Integration of Emerging Technologies, etc.), a compelling facet will be the integration of the USAF Warrant Officers into the existing rank structure, impacts on career progression for both enlisted and officer ranks, and selection criteria... Good Luck USAF - a good move, and a good selection of the first USAF career fields to re-introduce Warrant Officers to the USAF after almost 45 years.
