Book Review: "Management on the Mend" by John Toussaint, MD. In exploring transformative approaches in healthcare management, I recently read "Management on the Mend" by John Toussaint, M.D. While primarily written as a guide to the Lean transformation of a healthcare delivery system, the book transcends its primary focus and serves as a comprehensive resource. It lays the groundwork for understanding the intricacies of such a transformation and assessing its suitability for various organizational contexts. Particularly noteworthy is Chapter 3, which delves into the Shingo model's application within healthcare settings. This section stands out for its universal relevance, offering valuable insights regardless of whether Lean practices are the chosen path for organizational development. While many aspects of the book resonated with me, there were points of divergence. Specifically, the suggestion of posting visual management boards in each employee's office to track professional development may not fit with each organization's culture. In essence, "Management on the Mend" is a thought-provoking read that offers a blueprint for Lean transformation in healthcare and a platform for critical analysis of the practicality of its applications. It encourages a reflective evaluation of how such methodologies can be tailored to foster a culture of continuous improvement and patient-centered care. #leanhealthcare #leansixsigmayellowbelt
