The Bord Bia London team is delighted to launch this year's 74-page (!) State of the Nation UK report. This project has evolved over time and this year we decided to provide our Bord Bia clients with a more detailed overview of the key strategic challenges facing Irish food and drink companies in the UK market. We have covered big topics like food security, sustainability, the changing UK policy environment and the ever changing behaviours of the UK consumer. Lots of food for thought in this report and hopefully it provides our Bord Bia - The Irish Food Board clients with key insights on the likely direction of travel in the UK market. Regional Food Group Case Studies: Breaking Barriers. Another week, another spotlight on the fantastic work our regional food groups do to support local producers. This week, we're shining a light on the food and drink businesses who are breaking barriers. Running a business in a remote area comes with its own set of challenges, however The Hebridean Mustard Company benefits from its membership with Eat Drink Hebrides, connecting with like-minded businesses in remote areas. During the pandemic, Bowhouse Market created an online marketplace with the aim of connecting local traders with customers. The Regional Food Group, Food from Fife, has supported the business through networking opportunities and marketing. Highland based businesses, Little Bay Brownies and Rising Roots, have strengthened relationships with local producers through their memberships with Highland Good Food Partnership, enhancing the Highlands' food system resilience and connectivity. The Food Systems Institute at the University of Nottingham has been a work of passion for the last 2-3 years, firstly putting in place the groundwork for it and then co-developing it under the great leadership and direction of Jack A Bobo. His leadership has charted a direction of travel and over the next years starting today I will be continuing that work to accelerate the translation of the immense research knowledge generated across all aspects of the Food System by our academic colleagues at the University of Nottingham and our partners. The next 50 years will be the most important so far in our human existence and the food we eat and the way we produce it is a critical part of that story. Changing the food system is complex and it is only through partnerships and collaboration that we can address the challenges we face so let's work together now and build a better future. Through research, engagement and collaboration we can make our planet and its people healthier. This is our mission. BREAKING NEWS! 📰 We’re very proud to launch our new brand for the cluster: Tastebuds, the collective for food and drink innovators. As you may know, our funding expired at the end of September 2023. Since then, we have been working hard to build financial sustainability to be able to continue supporting this vibrant and amazing community of food and drink businesses. Our founding members have enabled us to achieve this. Since January, we have been working with the Norwich University of the Arts to create our new name, brand and visual identity. We hope you like it! Alongside this we are launching our new membership structure. Thanks to the funds we have raised from founders, we have managed to keep fees as low as possible, and at the price our members said they would like to see way back in March 2023, when we asked you about this at our conference. Not only do we have no eligibility criteria - as long as you work or support food and drink vendors - we can now support those across the region and further. What a week it has been! A week full of #learning, #validation, and #gratitude! Here’s what went down: ✅ This week was incredibly validating as I got to talk to so many different stakeholders. Pratik and I met with Eddie at While in Kathmandu to discuss the future potential of our existing #partnership. I also chatted with a few producers and farmer partners to understand how much value we are creating for them and spoke with #investors who have seen our work firsthand. Knowing that we’ve been able to create value across all spectrums of #stakeholders makes everything so much more meaningful. ✅ We also had our #allhands meeting today, which was an amazing sight to see. Every month, we’re greeted by a new team member, and it feels incredible to be growing at this pace. We’re always trying to bring something new to our all-hands meetings, and it was humbling to see each #teamleads passing the baton to other team members for updates. Small gestures go a long way! ✅ We completed our European Speciality Tea Association (European Tea Society) quarterly #boardmeeting this week, which was super energetic. There are many changes happening at the operational level, and we are excited to be opening doors to many new members at ESTA soon. If you are in the tea industry and not a member of ESTA, you might be missing out. Send a DM to David Veal, our executive director, to know more about #ESTA and join if interested. ✅ We also hosted an #inperson tea tasting event at BlackRock this week, which went really well. It turned into a mix of mindfulness and team-building activity. Kudos to Jing Yang for making it happen and Ashwin Joshi, CFA for the connection. ✅ An article about our #teatourism was published in World Tea Expo #News this week, highlighting a few of our amazing partners and friends in tea (Annabel Kalmar from Tea Rebellion, Raj Vable from Young Mountain Tea, Jeff Fuchs and Dan Robertson)and how tea tourism is on the rise.
