The loss of staff this high might be because schools and the government are reducing the hours taught at Key Stage 3, so students aren’t engaging as much at GCSE level which then has repercussions in vocational and A Level and subsequently HE… thus rendering the need for staff moot… It could also be that staff are leaving because of the stupidly high and unrealistic standards put on them to obtain the highest grades for every student, while being underfunded and dealing with a catastrophic level of behavioural and mental health issues, exacerbated by a pandemic, which staff are not qualified to deal with. It could also be the lack of awareness around staff well-being, needs and what staff have to say in terms of solutions… Not that I’ve thought much about it at all…. (For solutions ask the people who haven’t been on the front line in a classroom for two decades.) 👏 Ah… yes… we did that already. Now we are here. Note: I’m not usually political publicly but I am a huge advocate for the creative industries so when I see posts about how drastic the situation is that cause debates around whether the arts should be prioritised, I sit here thinking…. “At what point in the last 20 years, did it become okay to almost decimate an entire educational sector, alienating a huge population of people whose connection with the creative arts has been their main lifeline through some of the most adverse conditions?” Nothing exists without an idea, a design process or a creative solution and the idea for the tools to develop it… Creativity is innate within people and it’s unfathomable to have a government made up of people, tell me that my innate gift is not worth investing in. #ArtsEducationMatters (I’m available for Ted Talks for the foreseeable…)

If you are someone who thinks #education and/or #musiceducation specifically is important for #marginalised groups, can I please ask you to consider helping with a survey for the final study of my PhD research? The survey is seeking to find out about how different racial groups of young people experience #musiclessons in #school. The voices of #Black and other #globalmajority #students are underrepresented in music education #research, so I would particularly like to hear from them but this survey is for all #racial groups including White. You can find out more detailed information about the project and how to consent on the first page of the survey (link and QR code to access survey below). I need children aged 11-18 years old who have experienced whole class music lessons in school to complete the survey after a parent or carer has consented. Please consider if your own children can help or pass on to friends, colleagues, relatives etc. I believe this is important research and would appreciate your help. Music star Tamy Moyo is becoming a role model for girls nationwide through her inspiring school tours. At Harare Girls High, she encouraged students to believe in themselves “Don’t let society define what success looks like for you but continue to aim higher and higher. “Don’t let society define what success looks like for you but continue to aim higher and higher. There’s no excuses as to why you can’t succeed, be determined to do what you want to do. “Rather than be invited to the table, start creating your own table, start taking the initiative, start shaping society the way that you want by coming up with initiatives like going to schools and speaking to young people about how they can become, what they want to become and how they can fulfil that. “My message to young girls, who are trying to break through in the music industry, is to stay true to yourself and stay in your lane. “Remember to practice, putting in the time into your craft, there’s no excuses as to why you can’t succeed, be determined to do what you want to do.

Creative education is life-changing. But due to funding cuts, schools and families are forced to prioritise — and young people lose out on these benefits. RTM exists to narrow this attainment gap, and bring music education within reach of more students. 90,000 to be exact (and counting!) ⁠ ⁠ #InternationalDayOfEducation

It is out and I am very proud of this work! This paper is the result of years of research and on the ground experience to find a solution to up-skilling the teaching workforce to deliver quality music education. Yet again Music Education: Right from the Start is putting solutions out into the public domain to give school system leaders a framework to ensure every Australian child receives a quality, ongoing, sequential music education.
