Talking trash with the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works! 🗑️ Carbon Mapper Research Scientist & Waste Sector Lead Dr. Tia Scarpelli testified at the U.S. Capitol this week along with RMI’s Tom Frankiewicz, subject matter expert on waste sector methane. Key challenges were highlighted for the waste sector’s role in methane emissions. 🔺 Landfills are the third-largest source of human-generated methane emissions in the U.S. (EPA) 🔺 They were responsible for about 14.3% of human-generated methane emissions in 2021 (EPA). 🔺 Landfills need a monitoring strategy that leverages modern tools and technologies and gives operators flexibility to manage emissions. But thanks to emerging science and technology, solutions exist for monitoring, quantifying, and mitigating these emissions. ➡️ Remote sensing technologies are making invisible methane emissions visible. ➡️ Data is publicly available to showcase high emissions sources around the globe. ➡️ This can help the waste sector better understand and manage emissions in a cost-effective way. “Increased monitoring in itself is not enough — there is an additional need for voluntary action by operators or enforceable regulations to address methane leaks once identified.”  - Dr. Tia Scarpelli View the full Senate hearing recording here: https://lnkd.in/g-_rMqmi #CutMethane #EmissionsData #WasteManagement
