Effective partnerships don't just apply in business partnerships, but in partnerships between employees. I can think of multiple examples from my various employers in which I partnered with another employee and our strengths complemented each other. Normally these were peers, but one time it was a boss. When Morpho and Oberthur merged to form the worldwide company IDEMIA, one of the ramifications in the U.S. was the de facto acquisition of MorphoTrak by MorphoTrust to form IDEMIA North America. Because of MorphoTrust's pre-IDEMIA FOCI status (subsequently assumed by IDEMIA NSS), conversations during the Safran days between the U.S. controlled MorphoTrust and the "foreign" (French-controlled) MorphoTrak were limited. We even competed against each other at times, despite the fact that we were both part of Safran. As a result, when IDEMIA was formed the ex-Trust people didn't really know what the ex-Trak people did, and vice versa. The solution was to integrate the teams as tightly as possible. Therefore I, an ex-Trak person working in the Anaheim Hills, California office, reported to Peter Kirkwood, an ex-Trust person working in the Billerica, Massachusetts office. In addition to our different skill sets (such as Peter's mastery of quantitative analysis), we shared our domain knowledge with each other and cross-trained so that I better understood driver's licenses and enrollment, and he better understood ABIS. This partnership, as well as similar partnerships at Incode, Motorola, and elsewhere, ended up benefiting our employers because effective collaboration often supersedes solo efforts. (Aside: this is true even if your chief collaborators are thousands of miles away, as was the case at IDEMIA with Peter and at Incode with Danuta Debogorska and Chris V.. Yes, remote collaboration IS possible.)

Last night I got to spend some time with Cassandra Torres. She is awesome, is growing a business, and has now been a friend for 10 years. We met back in 2015 at a Panera Bread in Richardson, Texas. We were with Jody ☎️ Johnson talking about ProspectHunter. She is one of the founding member's of the #hunterfam, we just didnt know it yet. 😁 We worked together, a few times over the last decade, and Ive learned a lot from her. Most importantly, I can write it about this today. Ive always said (because It was said to me by Blair Brummett) that people come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Cassie checks all three boxes, which is rare. 10 years ago I didnt appreciate relationships, or life in general, as much as I do today. I was reminded, which I believe we all need constantly, how much value we place in non valuable things that will never help us grow, learn, love, etc. I still misplace my values, as we all do from time to time, and I always will, but I wanted to write this to hold myself accountable to putting more effort into people. Sometimes that just means sitting there and listening. Sometimes, it means helping with something that is totally inconvenient, and without condition. It is different for everyone in every situation. First 3 days back at work. Yes its a Saturday but I wanted to. My choice. The biggest thing is to be in charge of your own destiny. So, I get stick from other advisors for coming home with a different gift from every customer. 😄 Its a running joke in our house too from Rachel Thursby (Assoc. CIPD) "whats he brought home this time"🤣 The reality is, I wouldnt get personal gifts if I was providing a bad service. The personalisation means as much as how personable I am with customers. Just this week, a bottle of whisky, homemade brownies, breakfast butties and a pint in the pub. In recent months Ive had quails eggs (twice) and a CD of a customer singing!😍(amongst many other things) Now the difficulty I have with this is being able to accept these gifts. Coming from a previous industry where a "big" enquiry took place over an old lady dropping off a tin of shortbread for the shift, to say thanks, and now being self employed and having the freedom to embrace the virtue of kindness is just tranquility for me. I had my Air Pods in the other day and was contemplating the end of my 15th year as an executive recruiter. Somewhere between Alice in Chains and Frank Zappa I was thinking of the simple lessons I've learned over the years. What did I miss?? The lack of an answer is an answer. Yes…  I got the 10 emails you sent. No decision is also a decision. Silence speaks volumes, especially in a meeting. Just because I didn’t acknowledge you didn’t mean I didn’t hear you. The fact that you can’t see value in something doesn’t mean it doesn't exist. The worst crises create the biggest opportunities... for someone. Phone calls and discussions create more opportunities than emails and text messages. Video does not trump a face to face meeting. The best place to pick up the check is in the customer’s office. Buy a plane ticket, pay a visit. More careers were ruined by stupid (or angry) emails, text messages and social media posts than by poor performance. You have good friends and bad friends. The good ones will take you to new levels and the bad ones will drown you. Your call. Tugboat captains have more skills than the guys driving the big ships. Bigger does not mean better. You don’t have to be very good when you have a big brand behind you. Your personal brand must be strong, too. Salespeople who need big base salaries are usually not the best at sales. If you’re not willing to invest in your own career, why should the other guy do it? The person you knew 20 years ago is not the same as you knew them. People grow. The best “afterparty” is in the corner bar, alone with a Wall Street Journal, and a bartender who promises not to talk to you. The purpose of decaf is one of biggest mysteries of the universe.
