Inspiration often comes from unexpected places. For me, it came from a friend—Nagesh B S, Chairman of Shoppers Stop. Back in 2011, as I was launching Bigbasket, Nagesh was busy building something more than a business. He founded TRRAIN (TRUST FOR RETAILERS & RETAIL ASSOCIATES OF INDIA), a movement empowering women from low-income backgrounds and persons with disabilities (PWDs) to find livelihoods through retail. That made me reflect on inclusivity in a whole new light. So I took the inspiration and created a workspace where everyone could efficiently participate and thrive. Women started in our fruits and vegetable sections. Soon, they expanded into all areas of business, including delivery. As for PWDs, they’ve shown us that productivity has nothing to do with physical limitations. Some of our highest-performing employees come from this group. What I’ve learned is that inclusivity isn’t a one-time project. You need to keep the doors open for growth and break down any barriers that stand in the way. As Global Diversity Month begins, I’m reminded of Bigbasket’s first steps towards inclusion. When we wanted to hire women in our warehouses, there were concerns. Security, safety, comfort—we had to get it right. We were determined to not let these factors rob us of incredible talent. So we focused on creating a harassment-free environment, ensuring day shifts for female staff and developing a no-tolerance POSH policy. To date, we regularly hold sensitisation sessions in our warehouses and dark stores. These women drive Bigbasket’s success with their discipline, productivity and high EQ. Proving that inclusion is less about checkboxing criteria and more about giving people the opportunities they deserve. Happy diversity, everyone! Time to talk #mixedrace I think that there is work to be done and conversations to be had about greater #representation of mixed-race people within #organisations and #institutions. I find that some colleagues haven't always recognised that I am mixed-race or known how to broach topics of race. I feel as though a lot of #companies are trying to hit #diversity quotas. It's all well and good hiring people from #diverse backgrounds but you have to ensure that the environment is a safeplace for them. Are they going to encounter everyday #racism and #microaggressions from the current workforce or have the company invested in solid diversity, equity and #inclusion training and carried out lived experience research in order to help prevent this within their #business? The eSports world is changing. Traditionally dominated by men, more women are now making their mark as players, creators, and leaders. Even though challenges remain, we're seeing great progress towards gender inclusivity. Groups like Women in Games and AnyKey are crucial. They provide resources and support for women in eSports. And these efforts are paying off: Women now make up about 30% of professional eSports players, a big jump from just a few years ago. Having a supportive community matters. Safe spaces free from harassment and supportive fans help encourage female gamers. Brands and sponsors are also seeing the value in supporting women, offering more endorsements which help women build and sustain their careers. Everyone can help support gender diversity in eSports. Whether you're a fan, a player, or part of the industry, you can make a difference. Supporting women through mentorship, watching their games, or speaking up for inclusivity helps create a fairer eSports world.
