🚀 The aerospace and defense electronics industry needs AI technologies to reach new frontiers. While there have been strides in the last few years, adopting new technologies in the space remains challenging. This week in the Build Better Handbook, we sat down with Caitlin Curtis, who shared her insights based on years of experience in leading the adoption of software tools in one of the most regulated sectors. While AI remains a gray area due to the lack of widespread ITAR compliance- its eventual adoption is inevitable. Read more about her perspective. #AI #aerospace #defense #manufacturing

𝐔𝐒 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 The U.S. Department of Defense is working to expand a pilot programme launched in 2023, which aims to provide enhanced data processing capabilities for military units operating outside the United States. According to a senior official from the Pentagon's Chief Information Office, this initiative will address the growing demand for computing and storage solutions as combatant commands across the globe increasingly integrate sensors and unmanned systems. The programme, called the Joint Operational Edge (JOE) cloud initiative, is designed to help commanders manage and analyse the vast amounts of data collected by these systems, enabling them to extract crucial intelligence insights. In just over a year, the Department of Defense has established JOE nodes in locations such as Japan, Hawaii, Guam, and several sites across Europe and Africa. Rob Vietmeyer, the Department's Chief Software Officer, explained that the programme is still in its early stages, but the Pentagon plans to rapidly expand its capabilities in response to operational needs. Vietmeyer noted that the focus for now is on ensuring JOE delivers the right tools for combatant commands, and that it remains adaptable to meet future demands. Over the coming years, the plan is to increase the number of nodes from a handful to around 20, expanding only as needed to ensure maximum effectiveness. A key part of JOE's development involves making these capabilities accessible to field users, or "the edge", so they can assess their practical applications. Vietmeyer highlighted two areas of particular demand from the field: artificial intelligence (AI) and graphics processing unit (GPU) tools. GPUs, which are specialised circuits for processing images and graphics, are becoming increasingly important for military operations. Alongside expanding infrastructure, the JOE team is also working with partners from the Defence Information Systems Agency and U.S. Special Operations Command to develop policies and procurement strategies. Although the programme is currently funded as an enterprise-wide initiative, Vietmeyer indicated that it may eventually shift towards a fee-for-service model. Meanwhile, the Department of Defense is also tackling supply chain risks to ensure the security and reliability of its edge computing architecture.
